Title: Criticism Wanted on BGs
Post by: Nexic on Mon 21/02/2005 14:19:22
I've been trying my hand at BGs, and I think I'm doing okay. However I think I'm having trouble with my perspective.

This is the first one I tried a couple of days ago. I can't put my finger on it but something seems odd.

This is one I did today (my seond attempt) I think I've improved on lots of things, but still I seem to be having similar problems with perpective, it almost feels like I'm looking at the room with a weird lense or something. It could be because they are round, but there must be a way to make it look better?

Anyone got any ideas?

Is it ment to be all that wiggely? Oh, and I suggest removing or re-make that skull. It clashes with the rest of the style(hence the black outline).

Yeh its meant to be wiggley, going for a cartoony look. As for the skull that was an accident, not sure why I used black, and the shape of it is a little retarded.

But any thoughts on the perspective?

The floor seem to be raised at the back. The problem is that the table (and most of the floor) is drawn as seen from above, but the walls at the back are as seen almost from the front. That is a bit too wiggley! Even the wackiest pictures have a sense of wherefrom you're looking at it. Apart from Picasso and such, but I bet even Picasso would have had problems when it came to animating and moving stuff around in his pictures.

The easiest workaround would be to go for the look-down interpretation, and thus raise the roof (above the frame), and magnify + straighten out the windows and details around the walls.

These backgrounds are tits. Very cool use of cartoony perspective. One of the better examples of it I've seen posted to the lounge. It's easy to take that style too far, and I think this is just right. Aside from the obvious problem with the skull's outline, I think these are great.

I will say that the way you drew the wooden table and the wooden door seem more consistent to the style than the support beams in the background. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's something to do with the blurring.

Thanks for the nice comments penguin! I've been tampering with this pic for quite a while, and I tried Neil's suggestion but it ended up looking worse. I was properly doing it wrong somewhere along the way.

I tried putting a character in the room and after a lot of tampering I managed to make the scaling look almost correct.

Thanks for the comments :)

The first one looks a bit funkier than the second, but it has a better style. See if you can make it again with some of the perspective corrections they suggested.
