I'm having a hard time with the arms, especially the right one (his left one). It looks kind of "long", doesn't it? Do they look right to you? Suggestions please.

Its refreshing to see Guybrush in a different style. I like this, its clean, and the shading is spot on. His left leg looks a bit weird like that however.
How about this?

I think his left arm should be a bit more hidden behind his body.
Besides, I reckon he's too tall and lanky. I've shortened his torso and arms by 2-3 pixels.
And just for the record, I think it's a tremendous sprite.
I like it too:). It looks like a mix of the styles from the older and newer MI-games. A nice work.
Aussie, you saved my life, it looks exactly like I wanted to. And of course, thanks to you all for the good critics ;).
That's a nice version of Guybrush. I like it a lot. I don't know if there's anything I'd change, however, good work does deserve praise.
I know you asked for criticism on his stance, but I'd like to make a couple of suggestions regarding his face. To me, it looks a little too aristocratic for guybrush, the overbite and narrow jaw in particular seeming not quite right.
Here are a couple of alternatives that I think have a bit more of a guybrushy feel. They're rough, but I tried to stay within your style and pitch it somewhere between SMI and CMI. I think the softer features are more inkeeping with a young would-be pirate. I've also turned his head a little towards the viewer because I think it fits better with his stance.
I hope that this unsolicited facial criticism is useful. I think it's a very nice sprite, I particularly like the hair, and the colours are very well chosen.
Thanks Ali, I didn't noticed that. The third one you made looks very naive, and kind of silly, just like guybrush. I'll keep this in mind.
I made a quick edit to give you some ideas for improving your already impressive sprite.
1. Used your existing colors (and one extra) and added highlights to his skin and clothes to bring out features.
2. Made his face more innocent with slightly larger eyes ideal for expressions.
3. Moved his left arm more out of view.
4. Moved the left leg in one pixel.

Very solid design here. Nice work!
Very cool sprite, Sadistyk. The style reminds me a lot of buloght's MI sprites (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=24937.msg312508#msg312508). (That's a good thing.)
Wow, now that's a Guybrush!! It's an amazing job, progZmax. After I saw the repaint you did, I tried to do something like it on the original one, but I couldn't make it. I'm not THAT skilled... yet ;). But still, a great idea.
Well, instead of siting back and getting depressed, I tried to follow the instructions of progZmax and here's the result:

So, what do you think?

hmm, this is a sprite Bulghart (sp?) did a while back for a sprite jam. Same colours as yours but that could just be a reference thing.
Just trying to stir up some controversy :)
*gasp* oh the humanity!
Looks good, man. I think his right arm is too long now.
Yes, I did use the colours of that sprite. I hope you don't mind. If you do, just let me know and I'll change them.
Your spelling is fine as always chicky ;)
Sadistic, you then took the colours indirectly from the Monkey Island 1 game :D since I did, except for the hair maybe, cannot remember. Great sprite.
Thanks, to all of you.
A good follow up to my advice! The one thing you might do is round his face more, get rid of the pointed chin and nose. Remember, sharp features are usually reserved for villains, old people, and superheroes!
I like his villainy look, now just to sell it... we need a little beard, an uber kewl cape, and a walking stick.
Hey I made a draw over (though I'm not much of a spriter). Same colours, haha, not sure if that contributes anything to this thread. Looking forward to seeing the game :D I always imagined guybrush having a toughish stance, "I'm a pirate!"

Well, I spent a couple of minutes to make a nice tribute to your great guybrush...
3X
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w11/SCiDT/PaintOver/villianpaintover.png)
And silly me almost forgot the manacle.
EDIT:// I added a purple for the cape. Also, Bulghart you snuck that that pixel awesomeness in as I posted... Nice.
Well, I really can't think of Guybrush using a cane or even a monocle (espeacially with that t-shirt), but it's a great sprite.
Bulghart, that sprite is really something. especially the hair (that twirl reminds me the shape of the clouds in CMI).
Thanks both for the ideas.
EDIT: here's the final. I added the bear and change the colour of the shirt. Hope you like it:

Ok in my personal opinion :
* The lighting is way too much on the pants.
* I would suggest that you not try and animate these type of character for your first game?
* The back arm looks strangely in front of the body and not next to it. (also two renegade pixels on shirt)
* I don't like the extra color in the hair.
* Heres a tip try lighting the character from the top, it keeps consistency even when you use the sprite to flip left and right. That would improve your art ten fold already.
Look at Bulghart's pic with the fewer colors (original MI colors) and then see how the animation will be easier and also the picture just looks allot more defined cleaner and less messy. This IMO is very important for pixel art.
Regards,
Afflict.
You will have to be careful with that hair (the flick)^ It'll look silly if you don't accomadate for it in the walk cycle, which could be tricky.
All these sprites are fab, a cut above mine... :)
Following Afflict's advice on the animation part, I'll stick with the old one, and I tried to fix the arm. a bit of the hair, the chin and the nose:
Guybrush's shirt isn't Guybrush's shirt without the blue threadingggggggg! :P
This is mostly wonderful. His nose and chin just seem a bit pointy...and I think his head might be a bit too big for his neck...but don't get me wrong, you've done an incredible job here. Much better than I could do. :=
Hmm...the new nose somehow seems even pointier...although it's not really, the lighting does make it look very...sharp.
I think his stubbles got to go. Guybrush with a reasonable beard just doesnt fit.
I love the changes, you are getting better.
I like the head being so big, and the stubble well that's up to you. A new Guybrush is always fun to look at.
Keep in mind that in Mi1 he shouldn't have that much beard. Only in Mi2 I think he had the jacket and the goaty... :) Guybrush was always a bit of a boyish character, sort of like Peterpan.
I think the beard shows his "evolution". My game is placed between MI1 and MI2 so Guybrush must look older than the Guybrush from MI1 and younger than the Guybrush from MI2.
Just the remember GuyBrush seemed to get younger after MI2 since he didn't have any facial hair again, particularly in MI4 he looked his youngest I think.

But I'd place that more on the fact that the team behind CMI seemed to want to go back to the original game more than continue with Guybrush from the second, even more so in EMI, as he wears almost the exact same clothes he wears in the first game but now in 3D.
If this game takes place between MI1 and MI2, I think the stubble fits well to show that he's been trying to grow a beard and that it apparently takes him a while. XD
But the stubble, i think, makes him look even older. It's too full, maybe if it looked more downey (sp?)...
I agree. Do you see Guybrush with stubble in the other games? And also, the length of the legs needs to be improved. He looks really short...

Ive gotta find a better way to upload pictures.
ANyways I think you can see what I meant before. The stubble before looked to manly like what someone with a real thick beard has when he hasnt shaved that day.
Personally for guybrush i think thats too much I would prefer a more juvenal growth.
light and wispy. After all in MI2 everyone made fun of his "beard".
I think his hieght is perfect reminds me of the old MI games.
Can someone tell me a good way to make this pic bigger?

Code:

@ Sadistyk- His perfect now leave him be. Start finishing your animations! ;)
Thanks afflict.
Yeah nice I like it like that.
Now if only everyone was like me. Lol.
Though your original was great too. Do whatever you think Sadistyk sometimes I think this critic lounge does more harm than good.
I do prefer the darker stubble to be honest the other skin tone is to close to the prior one. The darker looks much better.
How about taking your sprites into a more realistic realm: (I didn't make these BTW)

Is there a reason you dug up a two year old thread, subspark?
Two years old? WHOOPS!!

Yeah, and it would be weird to suggest such a thing nevertheless since there's a very new thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=37893.0) about the game already being in production with these sprites.
