Anyway, I feel that your character style and your background style do not fit together that well I right now, which is mainly due to the different resolutions. Still, even when scaled down, the background look somewhat smoother than the characters.

What different resolutions? The only difference is the smoothenes (aka anti-aliasing). I think both styles are great, the smoother as well as the more pixelated / sharpened one.

Uhm... his backgrounds are at 640x480, while his sprites are at 320x240 (at least pixel-wise)... I'd say that's two different resolutions ;) (EDIT: I see that there are a few images in this thread where both sprite and background are at 320x240... the ones I referred to didn't... so, misunderstanding I guess :D)

I didn't say that I don't like his styles, but simply praising his work isn't very constructive, right?

I just think he could make sprites and backgrounds a little more consistent in style.

I've tried to mock-up something that might work ... They were hand-painted as well, but they were sharpened up a bit to match the pixelated design of the sprites

I must say that the mesh of different styles (pixel vs painted) didn't really bother me. However...when I look at Laserschwert's examples I do agree that a sharpened version of the background has a certain appeal and might work very well with the character-style. It is of course a 'taste' decision...

Ps. Welcome Laserschwert...

@Laserschwert
I really like how you sharpened the images. Care to share the workflow? Did you just add a unsharp mask or do something completely different and clever? There isn't much halos near the edges so its not just sharpen filter?

It IS just a the normal sharpen filter applied after downscaling to 320x240... no magic here.  ;)

I LOVE your choice of colors...you have real talent my friend!

Damn. Why do I always get those stupid halos around all the lines. :(

Babar

Laserschwert filtering DID leave a slight halo (you can see it easily in the forground rocks of the lower picture), but I agree, it does make the sprite mesh in better.

Hi all, i'm new here.

This is a very good post! i've learnt a lot of things about drawing and painting.
Ben, how's going your painting? Any news or improvement?

ThreeOhFour

Hey Johnny, and welcome :)

At the moment I am working on a very small game project with what I've learned here, but plan to come back and do some more learning once that has been released.

Cheers
