Title: Critique Fry 3?
Post by: Squinky on Wed 17/12/2003 18:02:39
I don't even know if this kind of deal is frowned upon, but I'm working on a game similar in style to my game fry 3 and I wanted it to better, you know, than it was. So I was wondering if I could get some serious advice on what people disliked and liked and how I can improve my style for the next game. The games been on the announcment forum, but that place isn't really a place where people critique your work, y'know.

Anyway, if you haven't played the game, and you want to give me advice, it's in my sig there as pirate fry 3 or something...

Well, the game was a bit too short and the ending really disappointed me.
(To those who haven't finished Pirate fry 3 don't look below)
Spoiler
I thought that you would kick the butt of a evil monster king and save the world and the medicinechick but what happens? The medicinechick also turns into one of those undead headless guys despite that Fry really liked her. I hope you won't make such a bad-ass ending like that in the sequels (if you make anymore of course) or I will never ever again play them. If I were you, I would have came with a better ending.

Otherwise it was good.

The first thing that pops into my head that bothered me is that it wasn't always clear what direction you could walk in. I didn't know there was an east of the dead guy pile until I accidentally walked too close to the edge. Maybe I'm not smart but a little more indication would be nice.

I'll play it again and remind myself more later

Yeah, I've always sucked at endings. But truthfully I think a lot of folks liked the wacky ending, I mean, Don't you get tired of the same old cliche endings? So, I decided to throw people for a loop on that one. That being said I apreciate your input and will work harder on the ending next time.

I worried about your problem too eric. I think what happened was that I used a combination of traced and recolored bgs and they didn't fit well together. Next time I'll plan things oout a little better. Thank you for your input.

Anyway, if anybody else has anything thing to say I' d appreciate it, as I'm in the infant stages of another similar project...

I liked the Fry 3 ending, it wasn't a usual cliche you waited to be there :P

Anyway, you could probably add some small animations (and small details!) to make the game world to live, and some sound effects too. Even footstep sounds add much in the game. Then about backgrounds... the sky seemed as it was night, but other things on the backgrounds didn't looked that it was night, so you could probably fiddle around with colors.

...or something. I'm not really good criticizer, but hope that helps :)

The game was great (including the ending).

I agree with Petteri.  Little details (animations) add soooo much to a scene.

* trees/grass swaying in a breeze
* lapping waves
* crabs scurrying across the beach

Stuff like that ... these weren't sorely missed in Fry 3 or anything ... but they just would have made it even greater!

I try to stuff a lot of detail into each scene.  Even if the detail has nothing to do with the goal/plot of the game.

I also script in dialogues and characters that have nothing to do with the goal/plot of the game.

Stuff like this just makes the game feel ... 'fuller' ... in my opinion.  I've never really liked when EVERYTHING in the game is necessary to finish the game.  As if there isn't anything in the world (of the game) that doesn't need to be there!

End of ramble :)
