Title: critique on female character sprite (UPDATE)
Post by: x_traveler_x on Tue 22/02/2005 23:20:16
Okay, this is my first attempt ever at drawing a sprite for a female character in a while, so I'm bound to get some constructive comments on it.Ã,  Wheather she's going to be used as the obligatory damsel-in-distress or the common dime-store-bar-fly has yet to be decided.

One thing I know needs work is the shoes, so I'm mostly looking forward to comments on that.Ã,  Thanks.

Overall it's a very nice image, good job!

There are some details that bother me though:

- Her eyes, she's crossed-eyed this way. Center the pupils and irises more and it'll be ok.
- Her eyebrows may be colored in a little less strong color so they don't seem so prominent.
- The necklace is V shaped. I think it would look nice if it was more rounded. Unless this is by design of course.
- Her boobs are ehm.. well.. saggy. Either that or the dress is crushing 'em. If you look at their overall shape they're oval instead of a nice perky circular shape :) Lower the clevage a pixel or 2 and it should be fine.
- If you keep her arms behind, you should consider bending them at the elbows a little. Try standing like that for yourself for a minute and you'll find it isn't really relaxing.
- And last, make her shoes point more forward. She doesn't seem very feminine to me this way.

It's quite a lot of points i mentioned, but i really like this character. Use of colors is nice and bright and would fit great into a cartoon-style game.

Go for it!

Quick edit:

I tried to keep things in your style and changed only the right side of her body.

Her right. Not ours.

Hers.

I did a couple of quick edits to give you some ideas.  The left version I kept as close to your style as possible, but I shortened the length of her face by 1 pixel, gave her a more natural pose, raised her boobs (they look a bit saggy) gave her a bit more hips, and adjusted her shoulders to make them look more feminine.  Edit 2 includes shading, a slightly different face, and a curvier shape.

The thing that really jumped out at me as being a little off was the "shadow" on her skirt. It just looks kinda... well, I think it shows too much :P What prog did is a little nicer, but the original sprite was good. That piece of shading just imediately made me think "hooker".

Wow, thanks for the input, people!

Well, I took a little bit of what everyone said, and made some changes to the sprite.Ã,  You all made some very good observations, and I noticed some things wrong myslef.Ã,  Here's the updated de-frumpped version:

Thats a very nice change you have made. It's probably the best yet :). The only thing I notice now is that she still seems to be crosseyed. Thats hard to change with only 2 pixels for the eye though.

I agree. :)  Changing the eyes would throw off the whole image, so they have to remain more or less the same.  I'm happy with it though.

Thanks for looking!
