Title: Critique on recent illustrations - CLEAVAGE WARNING :o
Post by: Chicky on Wed 09/07/2014 20:41:18
It's been a long time since I've posted something here for critique, mostly because all I do is top secret game stuff. := I'm practicing drawing high-res art between the HOURSANDHOURS&HOURS of pixel art I've been slaving over.

So I recently tried converting some of my pencil sketches to digital, kinda comic book style. I'm pretty sucky at digital painting so I'm trying to find a colouring technique that is flat and easy to reproduce.

Would appreciate critique on any area of these, proportions, line weight, colour etc. They could both do with a background, but that can wait for now!

Ta!

Appreciate the warning ;)

I'm trying hard to analyse your work, but I keep getting distracted by the woman in your display gif. Who the heck is that!?

Other than that, I reckon both pics are pretty decent imo if you going for the comic book style. I would say that in the second pic, the part under her chest looks too curved to be realistic. I would perhaps recommend putting something resembling rib bones under the chest.

The more professional artists here will be able to give you better feedback than me tho :-D

Great stuff.

For cartoons i always find using primitives as a skeleton the way to go, it helps with proportion
and to get the right pose before the heavier work begins, so to speak.

Keep on keeping on. :)

Welcome to the club! I've been mesmerized by that avatar for years and years...

I'm not the best anatomist, but I noticed some things.

Remember: Breasts begin below the armpit, not at the shoulderblades (it's a common thing to draw them high up, don't worry), and if she's wearing like, a one piece bodysuit, the fabric will smooth over the area.

Exactly!

Anyway: the first picture looks really good, I have no idea how to improve it even further. The second one is interesting, although the hair structure seems a bit odd, it resembles... A web? Especially at the top of her head.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I tend to overlook certain proportion/anatomy issues after working on the same piece for a prolonged time (flipping horizontally totally helps for this!)

It's good to hear there aren't any obvious issues with the first pic, spent a bit longer tweaking that one. Scavenger, your edit is spot on and definitely the thing that was bothering me. I'm at work at the moment but will work that into my next update. The hair on the second picture need some work too, I'm thinking it's a bit too detailed?

The avatar image is from an old TV advert, I'll dig out a YouTube link, she's certainly mesmerising ;)

I'm no specialist and maybe it's just me, but the 2nd looks off on her right eye. Seems a bit too close to the hear and too far away from the nose.

As for the 1st one, the only thing that maybe is a bit off, might be the shadow from the shirt on her left leg. Maybe it should reflect the 'hack" on the shirt?

Love the first one, maybe increase the hip/shoulder ratio a bit?

As for the second one, maybe like this:

But seriously, I love your work. You are a talented artist. And I'm very envious of you.

P.S. I think I'm in love with your avatar. Some nights I just watch the animation cycle over and over and over..

Had some time to work on this again today, I tried to incorporate all the points mentioned. Moved the antenna from her head, not really sure where to go with the image now... I guess she could be face to face with a creepy alien := My initial idea was to draw a RC android girl, but now she looks more like a space explorer :-D

It means a lot hearing all your compliments, so thanks again for those  :-*

Another thing: the shading over her left eye (the eye on the right-hand-side) is a bit like "pillow shading" as they call it : you darkened the corners alongside the black lines, instead of darkening everything that's below the eyebrow and above the cheek.
The same comment goes for the hair's shadow : it should darken the whole upper part of her forehead.
