I'm sure you guys read that thread title quite a lot.
Back to the point, i registered yesterday (i think) and i did my first character about 40 minutes ago (and my first try at pixel art).

Yep, it kinda sucks.

A few point to consider
*It's kind of a rush work since i just wanted to post it and go to sleep
*I'm not sure i exported it from PS properly, since some shading pixels seem to have dissapeared....
*I was going to eliminate the black outline, but it started looking funny so i left it as it is.
*Didn't quite have time to finish the "shoes" (it shows, right?).

Anyways, any makeovers/critics/general pointers you might want to do, plese, go ahead and do them!

I'm off to sleep now. Don't go to harsh on my first little guy.

Zigmat

Well, since nobody posted (which i assume is because this is awful :( ) i decided to make a slight update.

*Tried to eliminate the black outline
*Made fingers in the hands

Give it some time, it's a busy time period so not many people will post.

I'd quite happily play a game with this guy.

Your update, it looks like his outline goes at certain bits of his body. That's weird. If you want rid of black line, make every outline a darker shade of the colour inside that area. So a darker skin, and a draker shirt colour.

One hand is way bigger than the other, and longer.

His feet do look rushed actually, it shows. They also appear to have no detail on them.

His head seems smaller than the rest of him, but:

1) I am intoxicated

and

2) It looks funny!  ;D

I like the sprite, it's a pretty good design actually. You're going the right way. Here's a paintover:

-Colored the outline
-Made him more 'animation-friendly' and symmetrical
-Changed the shoes
-Fixed his hands

Look forward to seeing this game.

You have such a good sprite, you deserve some replies :)
First of all, great work already. Welcome to the forums, too.

I used largo's edit as a basis, hope you don't mind. I didn't add any extra colours in, I just altered your placement of them a little bit. Simple shading to show the basic form.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Well thanks for all the suggestions and ideas. I haven't had time to open photoshop these days.

One question though, when you do a paintover, you actually modify the sprite using it as a base or start from scratch using it as reference (on an underlaying layer, maybe)? Because i want to make some changes but if i touch anything from the sprite all the pixels get messed up.

Thanks again!

Mr Flibble

If you're using a program which supports layers, make a new layer on top of your sprite. This will make all your actions easily erasable, and you can toggle them on and off to see the original again.

If you don't have layers available, make a copy of the sprite (so you can work on it without fear of ruining it - you have a backup!) and then go nuts with it.

Starting from scratch would only be advisable if you were making serious changes to the pose or size, otherwise, editing is the way to go.
