Title: Derelict
Post by: big brother on Fri 01/07/2005 00:21:29
Since the Pixelerate and Pixel Academy forums seem to have been down for a few weeks, I'll just post here.

The concept: Video Game Americana
The title: Derelict
The photo reference: http://www.bobbittville.com/ChevyTruck-1937HowardGhent.jpg
20 colors, 2x zoom

Being a larger piece, it took me a few hours to complete. I'm not totally happy with the rust or the grill, but I tried to conserve the color count.

Looks great.
I'm not sure what it's got to do with "Video Game Americana" though. [EDIT - Is that a Streetfighter?]

I don't see anything wrong with the grill, or the rust for that matter.
For a derelict, the tires are well inflated.
The angle of the guy's face and nose looks like the corner of the newspaper at first glance.

Nice, looks like it came straight out of a SNES game.
Using muted pallettes is always nice to get a sort of rustic feel to an image.

WHAT? There's people who haven't heard about Fatal Fury? Garou: Mark of the wolves? King of fighters 1994-2003? And of course, all ported versions of Fatal Fury to almost all consoles I could name?
Whoo.

The picture, of course, is awesome.
I'd only point out these weird teal spots on car (won't quite match with other colors) and Terry's nose, which also looks a bit weird... Or a pixel too high. The front windshield could be a bit brighter, so it wouldn't look so flat.

Yeah, I guess it did turn out to be Terry Bogart. He represents the American team in the Fatal Fury games and the King of Fighters series.

And the truck, of course, is a Chevrolet.

Since you seem into quite subdued lighting I'm not sure whether this will be any helpful:

More exhaggerated stronger sunlight version, probably more in the style I would've gone for:

The charming simplicity of the original is pretty much lost in both edits, especially the second. I think it might be recapturered somewhat with some color reduction, which would be needed in any case since the amount probably doubled or tripled.

Anyway, cool pic.

I thought it was just perfect, until loominus edited it :o

no offense and that's great and all, but editing pixel art in non-pixelly means doesn't help the artist besides academically in a 'what would it look like' fashion. You're obviously very skilled as an artist, and in the usage of photoshop, but pixel art entails a host of specifics which do not benefit from putting on layers and going in with opacity brushes.

I see where you're coming from. What a wanted to present was different lighting settings that I myself would've used, if technically possible. Pixel art isn't something I've taken the time getting into, and if I would've attempted a pixel edit instead it would've most likely come out quite unattractive, which would've misrepresented the idea, not to mentioned taken ten times the time.

I appreciate your edit, loominous. I can see how the original looks a bit flat (especially the truck). Maybe some pixeling on the windshield could help a bit.
