Title: Detective Slug (side view) C&C *walkcycle added*
Post by: RoboPenguin on Thu 28/07/2005 18:18:32
I kinda have a habit of starting things and not finnishing them. Hopefully my attention span will last out until I finnish this project.

All I know at the moment is that it's going to be a discworld noir type story, but in the world of insects/bugs.

I'm working on the main character sprites at the moment. Any critisizms and comments are welcome.

normal size:

I'm trying to get a detective hat on him, but I'm having trouble getting it right. Help would be appretiated.

Edit: Now that I'm happy with the character, I've made an attempt at a walk (or crawl) cycle. I think it looks alright, tell me what you think.

A more characteristic look is in need. You must:

- Make him stand up using his lower body
- Give him the hat and some hands to manouvre with
- Make his expression more characteristic, maybe with a gritty grin and a toothpick in the mouth.

Hmm, I don't agree with the standing up. I don't want him to look too much like a slug/human hybrid. The toothpick and the hat I will add though, as I said, I'm trying to add a hat but I'm having difficulty getting it to look right.

Ill have to experiment with the hands, if he dose get any, they'll probably be 'Worms' style blobs.

I think he should have a lighter shading colour and a bit more expression.  ;)

Ok, heres the update. I still don't think the hat is quite right, but it's better than before. Thanks for the toothpick idea though, that works great. :)

Try puttting the eyes on stalks, that way the hat won't look all wierd.

I think this looks alittle better. Basically I just lowered the hat.

Not too keen on the eyes-on-stalks idea. I think it would make it less cartoon-like.

Looks like a dog did his ''busness'' on the snails head. lol Make the hat lower and tilted. And eyes on stems.  ;)

Cool character!

Eyes on stalks would be more snail-likeÃ,  :-\
But then again, slugs don't have eyes either ;)

Here's a solution for your detective hat. Put it so it goes between the eyes...

Ok, thanks for your comments. I decided to try the eyes-on-stalks and it actually turned out alright.

Make the hat a contrasting color.

This better? I dont want the hat to contrast too much, I'm trying to keep a dark, shadowy theme.

Maybe try and make the slug a light grey?

I still think the hat blends in too well with the slug. Try making the hat a different lighter colour. Just my opinion of course.  ;D And is he angry?

I think the hat looks weird like that. You should do it like RocketBoy did and make the hat come on top of the eyes or like that. Besides, what use is it if it's like that?

Walkcycle added. :D

Not yeat: The hat isn't supposed to be any use, it's for character/decoration. And the hat rocketboy did isn't the type I want, that's a more disney kind of hat, which isnt what I'm looking for.

Cool idea, I'd go for something more like this, though (shapewise):

I wouldn't. That is, if you want to go with a Discworld type style.

I'd place the hat more on the back. I didn't see what it was until I read the topic.

The animation is nice, but his upper half needs to be doing something.

I think the Shadow parts should move too. Other than that it looks good.
