Title: DN Games: LOGO
Post by: Dualnames on Tue 05/01/2010 12:52:16
I'm using this logo as Ben304 uses the two columns with 3 and 4 items. I was wondering any cool tricks on make it better?

I've always loved how the Lucas Arts Golden Man logo was changed in every Lucas Arts game for example.

What I've Done So Far

You can see how I animate the logo:

EDIT: The lag you may notice on the video is because of CamStudio. It's rather fluent real-time.

Okay, so well, probably stupid, but who cares anyway?

Well the two big things that bother me, is the D looks like an O, and the N is backwards (which you probably did on purpose, but I don't really like it).  So I read it as ON, with a backwards N. :P

Then the font looks kinda sloppy, especially the O and G.
The A looks like it's narrower than the E (which can make it look awkward).

On the black and white outlined one, I have a hard time knowing it's DN (or even ON, lol).  I think what's causing that is the vertical line that runs up through the inside of the D and N font.

The D takes up too much space loosing symmetry, it makes it look like the N is too far right.

I like the texture.

Maybe the right side of the D could go a bit lower, and the inside of the D could be rounded up on the right side is well, like this:

Ive tired to address the issues of symmetry brought up by Chicky. Ive also tired to further accentuate the 'D' based on what MrCheminee did with his paintover.

I used the 'M' in the Games as a center line because i felt that even though its not the perfect center the eye is drawn to not only the center character of the word 'games' but also the 'v' crevice.

Then i've curved the 'N' as well to visually connect it to the 'D'.

Anyway, hope this helps.

EDIT: i should mention that i removed the vertical lines on each character. i suppose they where a kind of shading, but i just found them distracting.

Somehow I think the N has lost it's power, what about making the N straight and just a little bit bigger than the D?

Don't really have experience in designing logos, but maybe this will help give you an idea or two. Not three, though. Good things never come in three... Only 42.

And a quick edit showing the N in bizarro world, since you seem to like that type of thing.

well done dualnames. and with some animation it'll get even sweeter.

Yeah, that's surprisingly awesome. I definitely get that warm LucasArts feeling. Nice work by you and Brentimous.

I can just see those squares drifting 3D-like (as snow flakes, or as from a fountain, or what have you) in the game intro.

To be honest they are static. But are you guys just really want to see them move that I'm going to give them animation.

I asked Brentimous if I could use his layout because I found it really good and a fair improvement. And he said it was ok. Anyway, I'll make an animation out of it.

for the animation id really advise an expansion-effect, like a balloon.

Expand and fade the squares while the logo fades in, then reverse it.

it'll probably work out.

If you sped it up by about 3x, you'd definitely have a winner.

If anything it should be slower.
Wouldn't it be better if you had them completely fade away instead of just instantly disappearing?  Almost looks too much this way.

You mean exactly what? The fade out on the end? Or just have the flakes move around like they do and fade out?

BTW, ddq, that's a challenge too!

Yes, for the small squares, a while loop from 0 to 100 transparency instead of it just disappearing completely like a popped balloon.

perhaps you could SLAM the logo in, quick fade, then start the particles. it seems odd to have the effect before the logo is even there.

Post by: ddq on Sun 10/01/2010 01:45:49
I think what I meant by faster was actually shorter. The speed of the squares is good, but the logo seems to overstay its welcome a bit. It'd be nice if it faded out a little faster too, a 20 second logo seems a little too long unless it transitions into a really tense scene. Besides, it's not like it your disclaimer that this game is not to be played by the elderly, faint of heart, those who are pregnant or may become pregnant, those with liver problems, or jerks and that the author is in no way responsible for the player's epileptic seizures that may be triggered by the random, spastic flashings of colors that pepper the game.

if the logo came first, and the particles came from behind it, that would be great.

You could have a wall of those blocks covering the screen, then have them flip over to reveal the logo and backdrop.  That would be kind of cool if you had them do it in a wave or something.  The current version looks okay but it's basically just blocks propagating at random from the logo, which doesn't really enhance things.  Another approach you could take, instead of blocks, would be to generate your own starfield moving towards the viewer, which would also make sense in the context of the game.

I'm using a particle engine to handle those blocks. Having a starfield out of them, isn't really a good idea (not that you said that), and having a starfield will indeed make sense in the context of the game.

Anyway, based on Darius poyer comes:
