Title: Do these opening intro screens look good to you?
Post by: R4L on Thu 27/11/2003 16:04:05
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Stand_Alone_Games_Prestent....bmp

This is the introduction to my game. Done in 320x200

http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Stand_Alone_Games_Prestent3.bmp

This is the same thing but it has a bigger character and a thing that displays my name.

This is the screen after the first 2. It says that chris jones is a genius and stuff like that for making ags.

Anyway can I improve anything? All criticism is welcome.

Hm, I think I have seen the "I'm with stupid" sign in your posts before, so I'm not gonna waste any time explaining why it's there.

The guy saying "stand alone" is pretty cool I guess, but over all it feels pretty simple, especially the last "screen", which is just some text saying CJ is genious. Doesn't seem to be too much work involved, in other words.

I concur with Andail. They look pretty rough and whipped up pretty quickly.

2) Always start what ya finish

Don't do a half assed job. Push yourself, and I'm sure you can push the abilities of MS Paint!

I can barely read "Stand Alone Games presents". I see somewhat of a theme here, but, in my opinion, it would look better if you had one base image that you just changed the words. That is, if you want a theme. Um:

[base image] Stand Alone Games presents

[same base image] a game by Rey Hect

[same base image] made in AGS (Chris Jones, you are a pure genius!)

But that's just me because I'm boring. Otherwise, just have entirely different images (that have a significant difference).

Mods, Andail: Yes I will work more on the screens and put maybe a cool animation scene for the beginning and when he comes to like one frame say where hes running or something, i can put like STAND ALONE GAMES PRESENT and then go back to him like dodging bullets or something and say something else. Its alot of work, but I will try to make it happen. I love MS-PAINT style for its color changes and so on.

AlexisVale: Like the idea, kinda, I don't know I will try it anyway. Thanks.

Well ladies and gentlemen, back to the old drawing board...

Why can't you convert to gif or png?  Do you like getting the I'm with stupid image every time you post an image?

If you need a converter try this: http://agagames.com/scotch/BMP2PNG.EXE

just drag your bmp file onto it and it'll make a png version of the same colour depth.

The image is nice though, only major critisism is that the flat front of the building is shaded like it is curved.  But overall looks quite nice, if a little bare.   Perhaps add some clouds and plants?

Thanks for the thanks or.. whatever.. yeah.. well anyway that converter works great. I am adding some clouds and plants right now. Thanks for the criticism. :)

The JPEG messed with the picture, but the GIF changed the light grey I had in the puffs of smoke to like a faint purple so I saved it like this.

I didn't add any plants because I can't make plants... I can't really draw nature that well. I was going to draw a tree but that was a disaster.

Give me more tips on plants please.
Thanks.

Here I have put a sunflower and a regular flower underneath it. I am gonna do the shadow of both of them soon. If you look real close at the sunflower, there are three shades of green on the stem, and a light shade of yellow at the tip of everyone of the pedals.

EDIT: YES IT IS IN BMP AND I DON'T CARE IF I AM STUPID! Bmp is better than jpeg because quality matters and gif just screwed with my colors so... here is my 2nd room in BMP.

EDIT: Sorry for making triple posts.

Yes, jpg is bad, gif screws with the colours if you save from paint, but save a bmp and use that converter.  Should have the exact same colours and be much smaller filesize, and is allowed by the forums.  AGS can import pngs now, too.

Heres another one, its a lake scene. The main character will be small so it looks big but this is what I can get cause I ain't no artist. Water is hard for me to draw.

It's a bit empty...

basically just a blue and two green blobs...
You should add some trees, bushes and rocks, perhaps.
As for the water: make it lighter at the shores to simulate some depth.

I can't really draw plants and I ain't really good with water so I think I won't use it. I tried making rocks and a tree but it was terrible.

I need some advice man.

Maybe you should start by sketching some simple things, like a glass or a box or something in your room.  It helps to get an idea of how to draw what you see first, and then draw what you imagine second.  That's just my opinion, and what I had to do to get anywhere with my drawing.

You could also search google for beginning drawing lessons or something, tutorials...there should also be a ton of tutorials available through the forums here.  Just try to have fun with it. ^^

Thanks for the advice! ;D I went and searched it up and got something, but I decided to not use that.
