This is something I started for the One Room One Week competition, but I'm probably not going to make the deadline. THe idea is to show a kind of loose cross section of some rooms and caves and things beneath the Reality on the Norm town, in a teeny scale, with a scrolly room bigger than the screen. Now I've been working on it for a while though, I'm kind of worried that it just won't make sense to people, visually. - the rooms are all kind of at different depths and don't actually meet up in any way that makes real sense. Mostly because I made it up as I was going along.
Dose it "work"? And if not, can it be saved, or is it a start over with better planning and using at least some basic perspective?

Cheers in advance,

Does it work? IMO it would work great! :D I have the same idea for the comp... just in a way smaller scale :P
I think it would work GREAT! Just great! I love the dinosaur bones. lol
I guess it would work fine... doesnt the screen just scroll if you make an oversized BG??
I believe thats the whole point... but i might be wrong(?)
Yeah, only about a quater of the whole image will be on screen at once.
I''m finding it kind of hard to say what I feel is wrong with it... the rooms are at different depths, not as in "depths below the ground" but depths "into" the screen... they shouldn't be able to link up the way I've lionked them, basically.
They're also ALL too far forward, if you look at the above ground buildings. Do you not find it looks odd when you follow the doors from room to room and things, and is it likely to confuse players is what I think I'm asking.
Cheers for the positive feedback, everyone!
Davy
What's that little person with the green shorts doing down there?

It's RON, man. Things don't have to make sense. ;)
Person with the green shorts? Huh?
I think it's brilliant. Although it's kinda weird having that treasure room below the water. :p
Agree with everyone else - looks awesome!
It would be even better if it revealed as you entered new "rooms".
EDIT: Perhaps this is what HillBilly's referring to?

Yeah, where's this person with the little green shorts?
It looks awesome, man! Reminds me of Tin Tin or something. Don't worry about making it perfect, it looks fun :)
Davy you've been updating the image a lot, deleting stuff and it makes us look that we have no idea what we'te talking about.
The green fellow was on the left side corner but he deleted it (although I like him), Kinoko.
Also the first image didn't have the lake with the pirates ship. Good adition too.
On the third level (red catacombs?) there is a single thing there, something that looks like a washing machine. Don't take it out, just asking what it is, and why...
I think it works, it does need some polish though. Like at the top of the screen where the street meets the ground, it's just a straight line... it might look better if it were more three-dimensional, you know?
Sorry if updating th eimage caused confusion, hadn't noticed hillbily's comment! :)
The "guy in green shorts" was just a character sprite I was using as a scale guide.
The washing machine is just a brass victorian styled kinda of washing machine I drew for fun/to stop the tunnel looking so bare. It's an obscure and silly reference to an old text adventure called Humbug that I love. I'll think of some kind of a use for it.
If I didn't keep getting bored and spending hours drawing little washing machines and drinks cabinets and skellingtons and things, I'd probably have finished the background by now.
Cheers for the good words, all, and thanks to Sergio and Steve for excellent suggestions.
Thanks again,
Davy
Blows my mind. This is gunna be an awesome game!
Skellington's alive!!11 ;)
It looks great, and the bg already gave me an idea for my own game (adding a walkable map), only thing right now: I'd make the Jolly Rogers look a bit more like made of cloth.
