I drew up the following sprite of a dog character:

I like it okay enough (it's supposed to be cartoony), but I'm wondering if anyone had any suggestions for drawing its hind legs (in the front view). I've tried drawing them in for a while now, without luck (at best they never look right... at worst, they look like massive testicles).

I'm also not terribly pleased with how his tail looks.

That aside, comments and criticism are welcome. Note though, that the general 2 pixel width outline is intentional, as it fits with everything else I've been doing for the game so far.

EDIT: Also, here's the side view. Critique it too if you like:

EDIT: Also note that the drawings are based on this picture:

I think it looks very good. Nice portrayal of the original model. Very few shades and clean lines. I like.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, about the tail... It looks like a snake after a quick koala snack. :)
Not really, but it seems to widen slightly where it shouldn't, so try "normalizing" it (gah, I'm stuck with musical expressions for graphics, how sad). :)

The hind legs look good to me. Good job!

EDIT:

Just had another look. ;)
The fore legs are thicker than the hind legs. Normalize? :)

Thanks!

Well, here's a couple new versions of the side view. I really don't know which I like best, though....

Let me know what you think about these, as well as c&c about the front view posted above (and how I might go about adding hind legs to it).

I think what you could do with the hind legs (for the front view) is to have them appear slightly at the outer side of each fore leg, but in a darker color so that they appear to be further back. This would also make it look like the hind legs are wider apart than the fore legs, which is usually how a dog stands.

the only thing I notice is that he appears to have a hump back going into his collar, aside from that I think it looks good.

the legs should not narrow so much towards the end, as it does not seem to match the side view. Also, it would like nicer if you made the legs seperately (in the front view): Right now they are part of the curve of the body. I know you said the 2 pixel outline was intentional, but in the front view, it seems to be a bit overdone and inconsistent.
Sorry for seeming so harsh, I just liked the side view, and the front view did not seem to match up to it.

Harsh? BAH! Keep the critiques coming, please (especially for the front view... I'm starting to be pretty pleased with the new version of the side view I'm working on. The more I look at the front view, though, the less happy I become with it.

At any rate, I'm working on some of the suggested changes and stuff as we speak.

Thanks for the comments so far.

H-hey, it's King! You an EarthBound fan then?

Ozwalled

Indeed I am. It's an EarthBound fangame I'm working on, as a matter o' fact. If you want more info, just PM me.

I think the grey outlines should be a bit thinner. But that could be the style you are drawing in ofcourse :)

Here are the new versions I've made of the front and side view of King the dog:

CHANGES:
-I've finally added a set of hind legs to the front view.
-Made the forelegs stand out a bit more seperately from the body (not 100% happy with how they look, though) in the front view.
-Made some of the oulines more even, especially around the ears on the front view.
-Reduced the taper of the front legs in the front view.
-Reduced the "hunchback" on the side view.
-fixed the collar a bit in side view.
-Fixed the end of the ear up a bit in side view.

The front view still looks wonky to me, though. More suggestions, critiques and even paintovers are welcome.

I'm trying to get this pooch down pretty good, as I'll be needing to make somewhere around four or five more (different dogs), and I figure I'll use this one as a template for the others.

*N3TGraph: As mentionned in the first post, I'm using a 2 pixel outline through the game, so that's not going to be changing.
