Hello,

I'm no expert but i thought maybe you'd like some ideas, it seems a bit heavy and long, it could be reduced perhaps and linked to the hair at ear level and not the neck, here's an example edit of what i mean, sorry if i played with the shapes but he looked stiff somehow:

Is there a reason for the blue skin? Anyways i like the detailed face and look :)

Edit: i looked up your posts and i've seen the backgrounds and screenies you posted so i have my answer about the blue skins. Nice backgrounds btw.

Regards

Sephiroth is right, beards don't join the hair at the back of the neck.  :)

It depends on how much hair you've got and where you shave. :D

Hm, don't like the eyebrows in both images. And if you want him to look old you might want to give him some "old" look. ;) Skinny or with a bear-belly. :D Wrinkles too although by such a small face I don't know how...  ::)

But my hair and beard look as though they do, because it's wildly out of control and I have long crazy hair and they kind of mix.  =D But other than that....

Well... tried to make him look older but I rather sucked the life (and intelligence) outta him and now he's about to speak his last words, all he would need now is a cane or a coffin... forgive me Rubacant  :P The bent pose and face details are the points i wanted to highlight.

You might try not to make the beard so long (and maybe more rounded, although not too much) and also make the beard go under his nose too (like the moustache part of the beard, don't know the word for that in english...or in my language for that matter).
That way you'll get more of a "professor look" instead of an old geezer...unless you're going for that of course.

Also, and this is purely estetic, draw him a small belly, it'll make the silouhette more interesting and also contribute to that "professor look", that's just an idea though. I see Spehi added that and I think it works (and he also added the teeth, that'll certanly help not looking like he's about to die).

Don't forget these are Maniac-Mansion-characters, so don't change the shape of body.

Yes, of course. If you change the shape of the bodies no one will ever be able to recognize the ripped and painted over sprites at all. That would be terrible. Almost as bad as actually doing your own sprites! ::)

Sephiroth's edits both have valid points about the way the beard looks. It should be connected via the sideburns like a real beard (http://www.hji.co.uk/hjimages/images/qhs1743/hji/medium/1987-men-beard.jpg) instead of connecting to somewhere in the back of the skull.

Spoiler
For the record, every time I see the title of this thread it makes me want to go on a serial killing spree...but it could just be me.

I just realised I somehow hurt your maniac-mansion fan feelings playing with the sprite, but what's with this angry comment? You don't give any crit yet you are giving orders on how we should deal with it, it makes me think you actually are the author of the thread.

You could say you don't want to bother changing the shapes to avoid re drawing all the animations, that I could understand, but as a fan I would like the graphics to look better than the original if possible so I'd be opened to any suggestions. I'm not saying mines are good, just my two cents ;)

HI  Thank you for all the posts.

I wanted to keep the long beard. All so the front side of the sprite. The ideas were very helpful.

Plus I dont think its about the shape of the sprite. Its the style. If you keep it the Maniac Mansion Style it will be ok. I think using new shape would be good. So the player wont get bord and will keep on seeing new content.

I'm no expert on sprites or graphics so I'm not going to edit it but I think you should listen to them. The beard does look a too heavy there.

Edit by ProgZ:  There's no need to quote the post directly above yours, let alone the images.  Please stop doing this.
