Title: drawing a strong chick (sprite)
Post by: SuperCarott on Thu 19/08/2004 22:11:01

I just redraw the old sprite of her, but i still feel she looks like... you know 'hey-is-that-thing-born-as-a-male?' :-\

Any suggestions on how i can get rid of that (apart from removing her musclesÃ,  :) ) look?

You could slim down the face, and everything else for that matter and make the muscles more defined.

the most apparent female attribute is the shoulder-waist-hips relation. A woman's shoulders are rarely broader than her hips, and in any case, her hips are much broader than her waist.
Also, a female waist is situated further up on the body, thus constituting a much smaller upper body in relation to the lower body.

The only female attribute your sprite conveys would her mangnificent bust (which works pretty well, even though not very realistic; the breasts of body-building women tend to shrink).

So, unless you allot your sprite at least one of these attributes, she will probably remain rather manly. But hey, it's a toon, it shouldn't really matter :)

Heh, this sprite really reminds me of Goblins. Anyway...

Here's the list of changes that I made:

- added makeup
- added a necklace to her neck
- made her body and face slimmer
- changed her hairstyle
- converted her boots to high heels
- changed the colour of the tank top and boxing gloves

I hope this gives you an idea.

Thanks for the ideas so far, based on them here's my new version:

Now how could i improve this one? (i dont really like how her face turned out  :-\  at least now she hasnt got that 'i stole my chin from schwarzenegger' thing  :) )

In gremlins 2 they gave the female gremlin shapely legs big lips and eye lashes with plenty of make up to try and make her less male like. I tried to do this in my quick edit. Oh yeah I made her shirt tied in the center, as it tends to look queer on guys.

(Say, wasnt that thing on gremlins 2 was both male and female? I remember the flask the gremlin drink from had both genders' symbols... err--)

Or i better use loominous' version?Ã,  ???

I think you should propably do the boob- and jawline somewhat like Loominous' version. I think that would get the male hormones under some control. She's never going to be pretty, tho...   :=

Unless you drink a six-packs before playing...  := err... i better rethink this game...  :(

(i wish i could draw that good, like the guy who makes polymer city chronicles... whatever  :-\ )

err, it IS a good sprite. Its just whatever you do, a chick with muscles is never going to look pretty. maybe slim her down a little, make her look a little less goofy and a bit more serious on the face. Much like loominous' edit.

Here is a quick draft, not sure if you will like it or not

I kept the muscles but made them a little less unattractive, made the legs larger to match the arms, moved her chest and waist up, and gave her a more flattering hair style.

Personally, I don't much like the added green colour for the eyes.

Ok, so this one is based on the mouth, nose, and legs of ProgZmax's version, plus the very first (incomplete) sprite (that was made for 640*400 resolution, not 480 but thats not the important part, oops  :) )

Hmm maybe its a little too manly now. like besides the hair, it could just look like a Rambo type guy.

AS HJRodrigo said, makeup makes a difference.

I think loominous's version looks the most feminin, try to mimick it the best you can.

Give 'er rosy cheeks..  maybe make the top pink hehe and lose the gloves?  ::) just some suggestions as i can't actually draw yet myself   :-\

I don't think pink would look good on her, then again, i don't think pink looks good on anything, yuck :P
I like how it's turned out, but her left hand looks a lot bigger than her right for some reason. more ditance from the shoulder strap to the end of the shoulder on the left one, if you now what I mean. Maybe making the right hand smaller in that part would work. Something like the one on the other two images, but still making the left arm a bit bigger, I think.
And I kinda like the gloves :P

edit: Also, the hair bit thats hanging out still looks odd. Too much hair gel?

What about this one? (just ignore my ol' good slaveÃ,  :) )

("Also, the hair bit thats hanging out still looks odd. Too much hair gel?"
by popular demand, the story of the hairbit!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/mutantleg/hairbit.gif
As you see back then the game started in rpgmaker2000, and i was too lazy to draw my own characters from scratch. So, when i finally get good enough to redesign the charaters the hair that covered the "female-ninja's" eyes evolved into the hairbit.)

yeah this one is a lot better especially the face, though i think maybe the chest could be mistaken for a large (muscly)Ã,  guy's chestÃ,  :-\ or maybe i'm stupid hehe

No you're right, they do sort of look like a guys muscly chest rather than breasts.

The perspective of the chest looks a bit un centralized.  Here is a quick edit  that tries to centralize the breast correctly, while keeping the correct perspective.

well I think that looks a lot beter. But the breasts still looked strange to me. They were just to round :P(I know theyr supose to be smartass ;)).
It's not a BIG change but I think it looks better this way.
BTW. I changed her left foot a bit to. I just extended it for 1 pixel.

Thanks for the help everyone, i couldnt do this one without you  ;D

Heh well I've got one more suggestion. How about making the face a touch darker to match with the darkest bit on the arms.

Ya' know I was thinking after looking down through the posts maybe she might look more girly if her hair was blonde or red? Black is rarley anyones hair color more of a dark dark brown.

Here is an example of what I mean, although I suck w/ hair & shading  :=

(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/paintovdm.PNG) Vs. (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/hmm4.GIF)

I think the blonde will realy work for it. Maybe add a lil' green bow in her hair  :D

the red one is funny lol she looks like a drag queen :D
blonde isnt such a bad idea..
