Since I can't even draw a tree, I tried to colorize photographs with Paintshop. Is there a trick to make them look less realistic, especially the flying boat?

:o:o:o
It's amazing.
How exactly do you do this?

I copied little textures from FOA-screens (walls of houses, water, trees) and used a semi-transparent brush to paint them over the images.

Heh, you left out the tree but the shadow of it is still on the building :).

I really don't see anything wrong with these pictures.  (didnt see that shadow though)  I think these give off that feel really well.  Keep it up.

I second Scummbuddy's comments, I'd keep using that technique, captures the FoA feel very well.

The end result is very, very good...
I usually use smat blur to make photos a bit like drawings but your technique is way much better...

still, I've been trying to get to FOA style and it ain't easy!!!

For anyone that gives this technique a try, I suggest close studying of the colors of the reference images while drawing over them. I think colors are the main reason why reference makes the image look that good. The secondary matters would probably be shapes - perspective, but that is easier to achieve without reference.

This is a good opportunity to gradually work without reference and still produce the same quality of backgrounds. Or if you still prefer working with reference, you can start adding extra stuff to the background, as it's really hard to find a picture with everything necessary on the right places.

Lucasfan, how about posting these textures here?

Posting textures? The FOA-screenshots are my "textures".
Btw.: Miez is the FOA-king.  ;)

Haha... well, really, your shots here are very much so in competition with his art... and he uses a tablet.

Both of you guys are very talented at what you do.

Yes, but Im too lazy to get a screenshot from FOA, then get the texture, implement it in PSP etc.

If you think about it, if you find yourself too lazy, then you really dont have the drive to make the games that you desire.

Aaargh! a fan! ;)
As soon as the FoY website is up again we'll post the FoY background tutorial that I wrote - you never know, it might come in handy. And by the way: I love the two BG pictures at the start of this thread, the look very, very FoA-ish.

Scummbuddy, I am too lazy to search for screenshots, then extract the textures, scale them, import them into PSP and then colour a photo. But if Ialready have the textures, I can experiment.
Spoiler
I've got a very original (in my opinion) Indy game, and I am already doing research for it.
