Title: Dungeonquest Theme.
Post by: Peder 🚀 on Mon 08/01/2007 17:36:05
Hey folks!

I am working on the main theme for a game I am working on "Dungeonquest".

I wanted the music to be a bit the same style as on the game Warcraft II.

Here is the song:

I would like any critics, like is the sound the wrong one?
Should I do something different?

(remember this is only gonna play at the very beginning of the game when the title comes up and you get the menu screen)

Also if someone CAN and WANT to try and make a "remake" to make it sound better then go ahead :).

I not 100% sure if I wants to do the music myself but I wanted to try.

Yeah, were you trying to go for that old-school NES feel? If so, it sounds pretty good. Sounds like the original Zelda game with a modern twist. However, I must admit that it sounds sort of plain. Maybe add some drums in there (orchestral-type drums, not the regular kind).

Sounds good! Is this used for an opening sequence or story sequence? I agree with Steel about adding extra instruments.

does that answer your question R4L? :P.

It is just at the very beginning when the title of the game fades in and the "new game, restore game, quit" etc. buttons pops up.

Very moody theme. Great feel. I wouldn't change anything except for another slight variation of the main theme. It gets a little repetitive when queued up like that. Maybe you could try just to vary the last measure (4/4) of the lead melody line. Nice work.

Thanks for replies.

I thinking of maybe adding some march drums to it.
Also will try and make a little bit more out of it.

Even though it will probably not be played long by anyone as it will only be on the start and once people have pressed new game or another option new music will play.

This is pretty good, but it doesn't really remind me of Warcraft II. I think the scoring for Warcraft II was more orchestral, and yours is more synthesized.

If this is just for the opening title, I'd drop the introductory build-up - maybe jump into it around 00:27 or 00:28 - and you could probably just loop the refrain. I don't really see much point in having a long track when the player is just going to click through the screen.

If you enjoyed creating this, then I'd say go ahead and try to make all your own music. I don't know how much experience you have, but I'd say this is a really good effort.

Yes, if anything it reminds me of the original Zelda (NES) theme.

I agree with Oz 100% on everything he has said in this thread.

I think if you do add drums, don't go overboard. To keep in line with the NES-like synth sounds, try to use some simple NES-like percussive sounds. Just simple ch-ch-ch-ch sounds, mostly.

Your choice of sounds is what is making it sounds like NES, which is NOT bad! ;)

On the contrary I'd say that it gives me a warm feeling and a need to go play...something...

On a more detailed level of analysis I'd say that it is rather repeatative. Maybe some variation, or some extra instrumentes, that could defina the harmony better, could make miracles, but it's just a suggestion really...

I think that adding some string/horn/whatever pads with harmonies on the second half, it would benefit the whole song, nad make it much more interesting, without making it dominant, for a background track.

I would add those kind of things if I had the equipment for it!

But I dont!
Though I do got a violin here but I not so good at it yet :P.

About the other stuff I gonna work with it tomorrow while I will be composing a new metal song.
So hopefully I will have a new version uploaded then!

it is kind of repetitive, but for all that, it feels noble and even mildly sorrowful. As in, we go to war for we must, to defend hearth and heartland, though we may go to our graves, its totaly a theme that would make me want to press the start button,  :D
