I finaly decided to get myself a wacom...since I spend alot of time painting and drawing (digitally and on paper aswell). Equiped with painter8 and the wacom I feel the digital result comes much closer as to how it would look in the old fashioned way...Here are 2 paintings I worked on last night and the night before:

#1
#2

I know they're extremely huge...so I posted the links....
Some C+C is appreciated....Also any other people here who use painter8 and a tablet ? Maybe they can share some of their works here....I'm more than willing to see what people are capable of using it....

Cheers!

Good God, man. Those are superb!

I had no idea you could do such realistic paintings with a tablet. Amazing.
You. Me. Denny's.

Inkoddi

ARgh! I want Painter 8 but i can't afford it -.-

For the paintings:  :o!

Which Wacom did you buy? I'm looking into getting one soon, myself.

C&C on #1: On the overall picture, good use of colors. The flesh tones look pretty convincing. Some of the highlights look a little too pure white to me, but that has everything to do with the actual lighting at the scene.

Her left arm, north of the elbow, looks a little beefy. Her left foot looks a bit flat and spread out thin. Once again, this could just be the unique set of attributes of the model, etc. Sides, it's much better than I could do!

C&C on #2: Her ribs look as though they concave inward as they wrap around her side the way they are shaded. Her shoulder looks a bit too brown in the shadowy area. Like maybe there should be a bit more blending going on there.

kaaZ

PenguinX : I bought the Wacom Intuos 2 A4(9X12) regular...which is already quite big...at least big enough...If you are willing to invest in one I'd realy recommend that size...Though I haven't tried the other sizes I think A3(12X18) would be overkill....and A5(6X8) , if you mostly use it for graphics, is a tad small...but probably just about enough...
I must say I'm extremely contented with my purchase...And if you do a lot of digital art it's defenitely a must have...though doing pixel art still feels a bit uneasy/strange...but that could just be me...

Maybe the light looks weird cause I had to improvise on the coloring since I used a black/white reference photo for that one...As for the foot looking flat..I tried to dislocate the focus from the hands and feet and place it on the middle parts of the body...maybe I failed in doing that...
Anyways...thanx for the comments...

Nice sketches, thanks for showing.  I enjoy seeing fellow artistic talent; it's rare enough.

1: Arms are very short, overall its nice.

2: Rib cage too low, hair line is a little weird, and the breasts are quite large, but that last one is just my own opnion.

Good work, keep them comming.

I can see how going from a black and white photo would create quite the challenge. Seeing that those flesh tones were improvised, I am impressed. The interesting thing about #1's foot is that I didn't notice it until I started to purposely nitpick the details. When you look at the image as a whole it looks, for lack of a better term, normal for the foot to be as it is. I guess in that sense you achieved your goal. Hope I wasn't too harsh - I really do like it a lot.

My budget was steering me towards a 9x12, as well. I've messed around with a 6x8 and it felt way too small for digital 'painting.'

Hey! kaaZ's avatar is animated  :o

On topic: Nice work kaaZ.  I don't know much about digital painting, but your work looks very professional.  I don't *personally* like the style, but that's not your fault.

Sorta on topic:  I own an Aiptek (Apetech, lol) 9x12 (actually is bigger than that)  If you can't afford a Wacom, these are second best and much more affordable.  I have not had any problems after I got the newest drivers.  The mouse and pen need batteries, but they will peacefully co-exist with your regular mouse (profiding you don't leave your pen or mouse ON THE TABLET) and not give you any problems.  I like mine, but am not very good at using it.  Basically, if you think you'll buy one of Wacom's inking styluses or airbrush pens, then its worth going Wacom, since they are not available for Aiptek.  If you don't care, Aiptek is the way to go.
That's like looking through a microscope at a bacterial culture and seeing a THOUSAND DANCING HAMSTERS!

Your whole planet is gonna blow up!  Your whole DAMN planet...

Evil

Hollister: Eric and I would disagree. Aiptek isnt the way to go. Just trust me on this one. However I havent gotten the new drivers. Maybe that will help...  ???

Haddas

I want a graphics tablet. Maybe that would motivate me into finishing something for once.

On the images. Nice! :o I LOVE naked women!
seriously: They're great. But I start thinking of a bodybuilder when I see her arms in the first pic.
too robust!

I'll just keep this thread running for a while if no one objects...I worked on another study of the female body this night ;) Considered some critic on the previous 2....

#3

Tried to focus mainly on the highlights on this one...aiming for a more dramaticaly use of shadow/highlights...I think it finaly could have used a bit more contrast...?
ow and I kept track of the progress on this one for those who might be interrested...

progress

I was going to add comments but got lazy...I might add it later...

i think there is enough contrast

the highlights look a bit funny because they are clearly not part of the light that is being cast on her...i know it's fun to draw but you might want to try just using photoshop to add highlights instead of trying to draw them that way

also the green highlight on her cheek looks a little out of place because you didn't add color to any of your other shadows and green also isn't used for the other highlights

the traingular shadow on her right shoulder looks a bit mishapen

still overall excellent...

MrColossal

Heyo Kaaz,

question: did you just add black to create the shadows? Cause if so I heartily recommend not.

Use more colours to create shadow and not just black, also i'd like to see the backlight [which seems to be a yellow colour] actually cast a different light on the woman and of less intensity so that we have darker shadows being cut into with the backlight [but that could just be personal].

also, she's a tad yellow in the skin colour, I futzed with the hue/saturation to try to get a more skin like skin:

http://sylpher.com/kafka/junk/edits/kaaznude.jpg

But now she's too red... A balance between the two I feel would look better.

I'm sorry, I have a hard time commenting on peices like this because I feel that I'm not good at it and I might be giving COMPLETELY wrong advice...

eric

but damn if that starting sketch isn't nice!

kaaZ

Thanx mr C and Stuh...realy appreciate this kind of comment...
I used a somewhat darker, less satured variant of the main skin tone for the shadows..pretty good point..It probably creates more depth if I used more colors for the shading...for now I'm a bit stuck on that though...I'm not going to trow in random colors...without actualy knowing what i'm doing...but since most refs I used were black and white that could be the issue...or maybe I should do a bit more reading on that specific subject...
I gues your right on the yellow skin tone...I went mad with the yellow paint ;) I guess the lightsources in the background didn't turn out like I had in mind...a balance between your edit an mine would probably look better idd...Having read that you finished Art school and your comment seems appropriate I eagerly receive yur comment...
Since it's not the result but the technique i'm going for I refuse to use PS for the lightning effects..;)) I made the mistake of dropping resaturation to much on her cheeks...sow it turned out to green...
well anywayz...I'm off, back to the drawing board...

Cheers!

These are really getting better with increasing numbers! Great work!

1:Other people already commented on the arms, so... I think the overall posture looks strange. Like she's twisted in an unnatural way.

2: Great improvement. Looks natural. My main issue is the hands which are to big in my opinion. Mans hands on a woman me thinks ;)... Chest looks fine, but I'm not sure about the two black line under below the armpit...

3: Great color and detail. My favourite so far. The only thing bothering me now is that the head is out of proportion. Its to big for the body, starting from the neck and up. (Or the body is to small for the head) Mayby the cleavage of the abdomen is a bit deep aswell... dunno...

Apart from that, this is ART! Very nice images...

loominous

Some modifications of the latest one (130 kb)

(i) Raised the blacklevel (in PS: levels/dragged the left arrow rightwards).

(ii) Made some modifications in the face (cheek, nose, mouth, eyes), the most significant being the eyes imo which looked "dead" (added eyelashes and iris).

(iii) Modified the upper hair somewhat

I was stunned by the backhair; excellent work.
Looking for a writer

I made another, more complete piece, last night...
#4
I'm aware it has a few problems though...serious C+C appreciated...

edit:

Thanx Stuh...yeah the harsh crit is good...I think you're right on the points you made...I couldn't get any of right by tweaking it..I tried to get this whole light issue right in PS but no succes on that....Also I used loads of different references for it which, didn't seem to fit together...I had difficulties putting them together as one piece...I'm going to work on that for sure...
thanx for pointing it all to me...

Err...this one doesn't seem to be on the same level as the other's you've shown.

If you want problem areas identified I'll give it a go:

* girl looks 2d
* skin fold shadows look exaggerated on her body
* we seem to be looking out of the forest, where the night sky/moon are illuminated from the back, whereas there is a direct light from behind us illuminating the girl which doesn't affect the rest of the scene.  with this much direct light from the front, the back lighting from the forest would all look black by contrast
* blood does not seem to be realisticly applied to head/mouth/hands..too much spatter, not enough run
* not getting any emotion by looking at the girls face...need more emotion somehow to make her come alive
* wing's do not appear to realistically attach to her back
* wing joint looks more like an insect leg joint than a wing joint, a wing joint there are two bones that join causing a bubble rather than a squeeze in the flesh
* wing's appear to be vertical planes
* wing's lack detail such as membranes and not sure why they look like tattered rags
* girl looks like she should be falling forward on her face
* the overall design of the scene looks too much like it was designed to be disturbing to actually be disturbing...subtleness, simplicity, and emotion are the key...not throwing every possible icon of evil into a collage...

i know i was harsh, but i think you can take it...your first pictures were awesome, you've set the bar now i'm going to judge all your work from that level (unless you post something better, in which case i will raise the bar)

happy drawing

Igor

Mmm, the first 3 are so yumy i couldn't critique them even if i'd want to! Great! :)

As Stuh pointed out, this last one is not quite as good though. I think it shows you weren't drawing a model from photo (correct me if i'm wrong). In that perspective i'm applouding it even more than to the first three, since i somehow appreciate pics that are drawn from head more.

Now to what bothers me about that last piece. I think the pose is a bit too static and wooden (good poses were one thing i liked about first pieces the most), also i'm missing those beautiful brush strokes, that made other studies so dynamic and great looking. It seems like when you started adding details, the pic lost all the energy.
It's still good painting of course, but not as good as first three.
