Title: EGA to VGA C&C
Post by: skullkid22 on Mon 10/10/2005 00:49:26
This is a paintover that I did of Zak's room from Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders:

Its beautiful. Nice paintover. The only thing I see that needs change is the black line on the bed. Either make it a light pink, as the color you used on the end of the bed, or just eliminate it. But also make the yellow trim of the blanket meet.

desk edge out of perspective

edit: as in badly. nothing in there is 100% but that really sticks out.

It looks good, but the alternating use of black lines and no black lines throws the image off a bit.  Take a good look at the top of the columns for instance.  Doesn't it look a bit weird to have one side outlined in black and the other not?  This seems to occur through the entire background, sections outlined in black and others not outlined at all.  Once you decide if you want all black outlines or none you will have a very respectable background

I feel a lot more could be done with it. The plant pot still looks very EGA and it looks like mostly pallete changes have been used as opposed to manually reworking the room.

I dunno, if this is the style you're after...i'm sure it looks good.  I mean, it's not bad, doesn't give me a VGA feeling.  I did an example with the potted plant in the first pic.  Just something really quick, I know it sucks..:

I know it's lost detail, I know it's blurry, but it's starting to look a bit nicer to me.  A little touching up to the colors and edges at this point and it might be very very sexy. Heh?

I don't really get a VGA feeling from this ... more like an EGA style, just using colors that aren't in the EGA pallette.

This is more what I think of when I think VGAish:

- I only touched up a few spots (the wall, floor, and bed)

This is, from an EGA screen, a pretty easy effect to create.

Hope it helps!

Those are screenshots from the FMTowns version released in Japan.

This (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/zak-mckracken-and-the-alien-mindbenders/screenshots/gameShotId,8117/) is Zak McKracken Enhanced and this (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/zak-mckracken-and-the-alien-mindbenders/screenshots/gameShotId,8124/) is the original version.

FMTowns games apparently often came in both japanese and english on the same disc.
