Title: El Presidente!
Post by: Akatosh on Wed 02/05/2007 18:35:55
After tinkering around with MSPaint and the Me Go Store sprites, I ended up with this character, which is supposed to be the protagonist in my next game.

(the cap was the hell of a lot of work)

I'm quite satisfied with it, but I'd like to hear your C&C, too.

Not to be rude, but you've got to be kidding!

I like the style though. It is stylish and simplistic. The fact that he hasn't got legs will certainly make the animation work load lighter. :)  Maybe a pair of stick legs would look nice. And stick arms too!

Simple but effective.
My impression of Latin American generals/dictators is that they go over the top with the medals and badges -I mean, they look positively gaudy.  Perhaps you could add more?
And.... well, this is nothing really, but it looks like his bigger eye ball is weighing him down, causing him to tilt to his right.  Maybe if you switched the big and small eye around....

Yes he seems a bit out of balance, maybe if you tilt his head to the other direction he would be a bit more balanced. Also the hat seems off as it has thinner outline than rest of sprite, so I would add a bit thicker outline to the hat also. I love that style so simple yet brilliant :)

Taking most into regard:

I tried to en-thicken (is that even a word?) the hat's outline a bit, but it turned out that the cap is mainly CONSISTING of the outline afterwards, so I left it as-is. Also, it's not too bad if the character is out of balance, due to the nature of the walkcycle ( :=)

I like the hand muppet look of him, with the simplistic badges and medals and stuff. But I gotta agree with previous posters -- the hat does not suit the style of the sprite. It is too much detailed and the thin outlines are weird. Here is a couple of suggestions and *ahem* redraws:

original>(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a23/FAMILIAR_QUEST/presidente2.png)  redraw1>(http://gask.oktawa.net/presidente01.PNG)  redraw2>(http://gask.oktawa.net/presidente02.PNG) redraw3>(http://gask.oktawa.net/presidente03.PNG)

First redraw looks best in my opinion - still keeps the uniqueness of the sprite while unifing the drawing style a bit more.

Second redraw is too much.

Third redraw shows that it is possible to redo the hat to the style of the sprite while maintaining the needed level of detail. Looks more consistent, doesn't it?

Third redraw was what I had in mind when talking about the hat outline.
Also there is the possibility of "redraw4" :) (http://bantza.raah.fi/junk/generale.png) where only the outer outline is thicker.

Ooh, I like the 3rd and 4th redraw! They probably need a little fixing still, but I guess one of them will make it. Thanks a lot, guys!  :)

I'd like to see the character with extremely straight and rigid arms and legs moving in a goose-step, just sticks as fovmester suggested. This is a very funny character and I love the latest edit.

I know I'm a bit of late, but here's my opinion on how cynical caribbean democratic tyrant would look.

p.s. Mind the beard!

Maybe I have strange taste : But I do prefer the original.

Single line for decorations / hat.
Double line for the characters.

It gives an emphasis on the guy while somewhat having fun on the rest.  :=
