Title: Er... a bg?
Post by: gameboy on Mon 23/01/2006 15:24:17
Well, this bg is not actually for a game, it's just a first try to draw something with ArtGem.

Since I am real noob to ArtGem, I thought to start more learning it.
This is the first reslut:

It's supposed to be a parking lot and flat building, with a car and a barrel.
Any ideas? Or crits? Or did I do something completly wrong?

I really like your clean style.. it's very good.. but i dont think the graffiti on the building belong in this kind of style..

For your first try it's really great :)

The barrel looks slightly funny shaped and the Bin looks a bit too high. The car and building is nice. Overall a good looking picture. Just try to fix up the shape of the Bin and Barrel.

I liked your background, so I gave it a quick paintover. It may not be what you want since it's a completely different style now, but maybe it'll give you a few ideas:

-Added a bit of texture to the grass/street/house
-Added a lamp
-Added more shape to the barrel
-Added a water drain pipe (is that the right term?)

Only one thing is not correct. This building has no doors...
Desbite that it's nice bg I like it.

I think it looks really good, I like your style. The building looks a little squished though. You might want to change it to have two storeys visible instead of three. And some basic shading on the barrel would look nice I think.

Nice pic indeed. Still, I have a few things to point out. For first, the trashcan is too much the same colour as the grass. It looks as if it were covered init somehow.

Then, at least where I live, the white lines of the parking slot go all the way to the grassline. Not vital, but a suggestion.
Ã,  Then the horizon. I assume there's an ocean of somekind back there? If so, it is way too high. The line that separates the water from the sky is too high, and the water loks as if the shoreline was at the grounds of the building.

oh, and one thing too... is that long grass or what behind the building? it looks rather strange when it's only there and not in the front at all. And I was wondering about the architectural construct. as in, where's the door? Or is the flat just big, with 3 windows... And I'd place a window on the side next to the drain pipe as well.

But a very good start, I wish I was of any help here ;)

Grass is definately too flat at the moment. Try to add some depth.
And the white road stripes are too bright as well. I think they have to blend in more so they wouldn't look like just painted.

P.S - Is that car a Lada? Kinda looks like it.  ;D

Yup. It's correct. This house definetly needs a door. (How didn't I notice it myself?)

Btw, nice paintover, Bernie! Though I think the water is maybe bit too saturated, the grass and the barrel look much better. And the details also.

And - well - I also agree about the horizon line.

And all the other stuff you guys said.. I agree. And I'm willing to change the things that are wrong.

And the car... It really is Lada! The 2103 model, btw! :D
