Title: Experimental Logo Rendering
Post by: seaduck on Wed 08/03/2006 15:47:02
Hi folks!

As we all know one can't start making games without having a proper house logo (cough.) I'm aiming at a simple basic shape (as logos should be legible in B&W), then enhance it with colour.

Today I've finally devised a shape that I like, so I tried to colour it. It still looks a bit empty, perhaps I'll put some stuff around it, maybe animated, or maybe stuff specific to each game.

Commens, ideas, paintovers?

I completely agree that a logo should have a very simple silohette. If you want it to look interesting when coloured you could always give it a nice interesting texture. For example (forgive the cliches, but you get the idea) marble or chrome.

Edit: I do like the idea of customising the logo (palette and texture) to have relevance to the game it's in. What's the theme of the game?

I think logo is superb, simple and good looking, i would only change "GAMES" to be more aligned with the edge of the logo, like MALVAX is. Hope you understand what i mean :D.

And color of the logo is not very revalant to the game theme. as you can see all the major game companies use the same logo no matter to the game.

This does tend to be the case with game studios, but film studios (I'm thinking New Line Cinema here) do frequently adapt the colour scheme of their logo to match he film, and the effect is quite cool.

Thanks, Sektor13! Yes, that's a good point. The trouble is that the "GAMES" is too short and when I do that it looks too far from the X:

CaptainBinky: I don't have any game in mind right now. I had started a game for february mags, but didn't have time to finish it, so I dropped it.

I think the logo is very powerfull and wouldn't reccomend changing too much. It has a very nice retro feel.

I made a slight adjustment bij just removing the 'X' and moving both words inwards.
Don't know if it's an improvement, but it makes both words of equal length and incorporates the logo x into the name..

edit: On second thought, it isn't obvious at first sight that the name is 'malvax' instead of 'malva'..  So never mind..

Yes, that is true, but i think it is better to be alligned with the edge that to the "X".

And Oneway s solution is good too.

Yes, that is true, even some game studios change logos sometimes to match the game, i think that both ways are good enough.

I like the Retro feel you could maybe add a shine mark like this one in mine

This is done in Photoshop 7 which you can download using a nice P2P server

I love the feel of yours though

Lens flares are reserved for newbies and people who haven't yet figured out that adding random filters to images make them suck more than a sucking sucky thing.

Vacuum cleaner is the word you're looking for, Voh.
Or hoover for the brits.

The only filter i'd use in a game bg is the clouds filter for quick n easy clouds.

Wow, it's getting pretty hot in here!

Don't worry, I'd never use a flare lens, they're the wrath of graphicsÃ,  ;D

I tried stretching the "GAMES" to make it wider. Is it better or worse?

The X ending and then picking up those thinner lines was bugging me.  I attempted a paint-over:

I just carried the tops of the X out to the sides.  It still achieves that bound look ... but without the break-up of the X.

Just my opinion.

Some suggestions:
- I would suggest making MALVAX and GAMES much smaller.  Seems like the big X is the logo effect you're going for.
- I would change the bright red color of the words as well.  I like the metallic tone of the X, but the red is distracting!

Hope it helps!

I still like original better, those lines look nice, even red color doesn't bother me, but you could try to experiment with different colors to see if they look better.

Lens flare can only be good if it's presented with a Zing (http://americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/index.php/Lens_Flare). :=
