Title: Film noir - prelim animation + BG
Post by: Xadhoom on Sat 08/01/2005 20:40:26
Just more training. I wanted to make some animation today, and so I did. It is of course not finished, this is just the blocking out. And as I needed a background for him, I threw one together also.

ok, you can animate REALLY good. :D Better than me.  :oWhat prog do you use. And would you consider doing a tutorial on animating like that??? :) BTW maybe someone drops quietly down behind him from the rooftop??? :)

I suggest something jumps on his back, so he "flies" through the air(out of the screen), not seeing what attacked him. Then we see small fight clouds, with little pain stars and all kinds of stuff flying.

That's it for now. Should take some time to animate smooth, together with the one you've already skecthed..

Wow! Is there anything you can't do? As for what happens next, I always liked stuff that ends like (http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/armed/pyth.gif)

Yes, very good as always. I wouldn't mind seeing him step in the puddle and having his leg get sucked down... Or pull of his rubber mask and trench coat and actually be a sexy woman.

Yeh the monty python foot is always good. Maybe a hand from the corner takes his hat then he looks up and the foot stamps on him.

Thanks for the comments, guys. As for the suggestions...uh...they're a bit more...silly...than I had in mind. I thought more something along the lines of a gangster movie...

If you're looking for 'Gangster Movie-esque', I'd suggest a bullet ricocheting off of the corner of the alleyway just inches above his head, having your fedora'd character to duck down, suprisedly and to dash back into the alleyway... If you wanted to drag it out even more, have him poke his head out to look again, and another plink off of the corner of the wall.

Just off the top of my head.

Yeh and make the hat fly off

Yeah, you could have it hit his hat, which would spin in the air, and then he could catch it.
Perhaps not as serious as you'd hoped, but comedy moments make things memorable.

Or he could advance towards the door, while we see someone coming down the rainpipe, where he didn't check.

From the animation I get the impression that he jumps out, surveys the area, spots somebody he knows and quickly raises the gun up before putting it away.

Maybe his boss, Lt. Franklin is in the ally ...

After he holsters the gun and adjusts his hat, the Lt. walks over and they exchange dialog.  Then the Lt. suddenly spots something and shoves you out of the way just as the ally echos with the sound of a gunshot.  A bullet tears into the Lt.'s chest throwing him back onto the stairway.  An archway of blood follows him to the ground.  You quick draw your gun again as you dive for cover ...

Not too comical I hope ;)

I thought he was expecting someone to be there, but then he saw no one, hence the surprised hat adjusting bit.

Quick lighting mods:

What pretty much defines film noir visually is the use of shadows and contrast and I missed both (mostly the shadows), in the original version.

Nicely done otherwise though.

hey loominous don't take this the wrong way but do you ever do any art of your own?

Boyd, wrong way or not that sounds damn harsh. Loominous is a master of lighting, not to mention very helpful, so who are you to question him.

Here you go, Boyd; this is some of Loomy's art, which I found by scavenging through his old posts.

I distinctly remember another picture of his (a semi-pixelated one), but I can't find it.

Getting back on topic, that animation is awesome, Xadhoom. Perhaps you could have one enemy emerge from behind the garbage can, and the other come out from the alley. And then there could be a massive gunfight. ^_^

I assume that as one of the best artists here, Loominous posts his art somwhere he can actually get helpful critics as opposed to "HOLY CRAP THAT'S AWESOME HOW DO YOU DO THAT AAAG ORGASM" kind of stuff he'd get posting here.

That's much better, Loominous. Thanks. :)
As for what happens next, I really like Darth's version...think I'll go with that. Thanks everybody, though. :)

Great animation Xadhoom. The only thing that felt awkward was the pose in the end of the animation, it looks too arched, imo. Can't wait to see it as a sprite! :)

Btw, happy birthday!
