Post by: Seb on Thu 22/05/2008 18:19:02
Hi all
This is the first background for my first ever game, and I'd like some feedback on it please  :)

Not to be harsh, it is good but it's very square and boring.

Try adding some more items to the building to give the eye something to actually look at.

That's an image of an apartment building I searched up in Google.  I tried to find one closest to your building.
See how each window has something going on inside.  Some blinds are crooked, some are opened, some are closed.  There are lamps on the outside.  A nice canopy above the door.  Some plants out front.  Different colored bricks around the windows and on the corners of the building.  Some fancy brick work at the top of the building.

I also don't like how the sides of your building are slanted inwards at the top, with only 2 floors.

Don't lie Ryan Timothy. It's a bit rubbish. The look of the building is boring, it's done in a very crap 3d style, with repeating textures, and is very square.

The size of the building does not accuratly reflect the size of the floors of the building. Either the rooms are about 10 foot tall in size or you need to redo the whole thing.

Basically what you want to do is redraw (or re-3d the whole thing, although I seriously advise against that as you seem to be struggling) the whole building.

What I would do is have the size of your character and make the 'ceiling' of each floor about 1/3 the size of your character on top of his head. That should give you more accurate ceiling heights. In  that building, you could have had 3 floors instead of 2!

And also take the advice of Ryan Timothy and google image some buildings, to make the outside less boring.

I agree with Ryan, you should try adding some randomization to the brick textures. if you look at other buildings, the brick are not all the same color. What program did you use?

maybe a weird suggestion. But why not turn this into a South park-ish 3d style. It's alot easier to make and for a very first game you need all the easy you can get  :P
