Title: First Background, need C+C
Post by: Medical Waste on Sun 04/03/2007 09:03:30
Howdy folks!
I've been working for many many hours on this, it is, of course, my first background I've made for an AGS game.

There is still more detail I would like to add, but I think at this point there is enough done to get some critique, so tell me what you think.

Thanks!

I think that the many hours you spend paid off, as it's looking very well made!

A couple of suggestios, or ideas, nothing too serious:

The room looks a little big as it is. you are aware of that right?
And I'm not particularly fond of the blood stains. They look like they were made with the spray tool or something, so it don't look realistic, while the rest of the room is.

Just that!

Looking forward to the game. :)

Thanks!
Yeah, I know it's big, something I've been struggling with. I was planning just to add some more objects in that don't distract, and do the foreground for real. About the blood, I totally agree, I am at a loss with how to draw realistic blood stains. I guess I'll google some pictures.

Thanks for your input.

Oh, and you'll be waiting a long time for the game!!

This is really nice! I love the sink, it reminds me of SQ6. However, the wobbly black border isn't inkeeping with the clean lines of the backdrop. I'd get make them more rigid, perhaps in the shape of plumbing, or get rid of them altogether.

Very good style and nice choice of colors.

I'm not too fond of the black outlines either, unless perhaps the room is seen through a crack in the wall from the adjoining room or something. Another small detail is that the cracked glass read to me as lightning outside the windows at first. A little darker, or a bit of opacity on the glass might make it read clearer.

You have a good sense for details, but the room is simply too spacious right now. The scene needs more tightly crammed objects, more overlapping lines and surfaces, less "giant box with tiny objects thrown in"-feeling.
It's a shame if the wonderful details would get lost in the huge space.

Thanks everyone for you input. I've added some things and made some changes. Let me know what you think of it now.

I still like it! :D

It depends on where you live I guess, but over here in the UK I doubt there is any bedroom this size actually. It looks like a super duper, WOW, crash bang triple bedroom or something...

All the details added some exta warmth in the room, but still considering that a single bed could be around 1 m then you have a wall of 5m by one of 4-5m, which makes very much sense, and I apologize :-[...

Somehow, although sizes seem to be ok, it still looks a tad on the big size.. :-\ can't name what it is though... The door in conjuction with the half painted walls, maybe at fault... :-\

Love the added details you have (windows, which look stunning!)

2 questions now:

1. What is that red dot?
2. Is the game ready yet? ;D ;D ;D (j/k)

cool i guess?

whats the story?

Well, it's not a bedroom, it's an old hospital room, some of which were very large. I guess you could imagine this one has been cleared out somewhat for whatever reason.

The red dot is the vanishing point which I forgot to take out this time!
If you want a one room game with a yellow key and roger in it, then yes, the game is 100% complete!  ;D

The story only about 70% written, so I think there's no point in talking about it yet.

Thanks.

That update looks a lot stronger. The foreground looks much better. I think you could do with a little shading on foreground, leaving it still mostly black. If the bottles had some shading, like the chest in the bottom right, I think it would help pull the foreground and background together.

The curved cobwebs at the top left and right still don't look right to me. I like a good vignette, but I think it spoils the clinical rigidity of the location a little.

The details are gorgeous though, the windows and the bed look terrific. They make you want to pull out the old eye cursor and give 'em a good looking at!

I did this edit really quickly to give you some ideas.

1.  Changed the blood to a shape that looked more natural.
2.  Added a light switch

You should really decide on whether you want the lights on or off and then add shadows accordingly.  Done right, it will make the room look 10x better.  Nice work!

I did an edit adding shadows to the room with the windows as a light source.  I only had a few colors to work with to make shades, so I'm sure you could make it look much better in photoshop or something.

I really like the latest edit, it keeps improving and I like the light that comes into the room via the windows, it gives a more realistic look and the blood looks much more realistic too. I really look fwd to seeing this room in a game :)

Thanks, I like the light, I haven't got around to trying it yet though.
As for the blood it's much too saturated and bright for a dark floor, and it looks to fresh for the story.

Yes on 2nd look, now that you mention its a bit too fresh for the story, you could desaturate it a bit more, darken it, but leave some tiny parts of it a little brighter than the major areas, but mostly all darkish.

I like the light comming from the windows to the floor but I think it would look much better without the lightboxes. Also the blood looks a little weak. What could of happened there that left so little blood on the floor? For the rest it's a great background!!  :)

Alright, I managed to work a bit more on this background. I brought in the foreground to make it tighter and did a bit of shading.

My hope is that it feels like somewhere you don't want to be.

You guys have been a great help, I have learnt a lot doing this. Any other comments or suggestions are welcome. I think I might finally get to work on my second background! Game should be ready before I'm dead!

This background has gone from great to bloody brilliant since the first post.
Its much busier and the cobwebs are a great touch.  The thick black border gives it an eerie sense of claustrphobia and I can't wait to play a game with more backgrounds like this.

indeed it's really good! I hope to see some more soon  :)

Now that looks really good! :D

I just hope you can keep the character art consistent with the background. :)

I also think it looks excellent.  ^^ I really like the color on the bottles in the front.

A agree, that looks nice. I like the slightly sketchy shading style! The framing and foreground objects are effective too.

If the rounded corners at the top left and right are an arch that's part of the room (and not just an imaginary border) it would add some depth to shade the inside of the arch. I'd use a very dark color, almost black but visible enough to give the arch dimension.

Very good.

Have you got a character to go with this? As the style is going to be hard to match in a sprite. Amazing if you manage it though!

I haven't finished a full character yet, but I will after I finish my second background (which is going MUCH faster). Then I plan on working on a bit of scripting, since I'm totally new to that as well (though I am a programmer, so it shouldn't be so bad  ;)).

But yes, I do think I can make characters fit, it's my own style after all!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
