First Background

This is the first background I've ever attempted to make. I just randomly made it. There was no purpose, except to make a slob's kitchen. I really suck at drawing, so I had to cover it up with a lot of pretty brushes and colors.

Anyway, the thing that troubles me the most and prevents me from drawing a lot of objects is perspective. I never know how much of the top, bottom, or side of an object should be shown. Any tips? How does a vanishing point really work? I learned about 8 years ago, but I've forgotten.

Seems that your host doesn't allow remote linking, in that case you may add "http://invis.free.anonymizer.com" in front of the image's url:

Actually I'll say, as your first background, it serves its purpose, of course one obvious problem is the perspective (as you mentioned already), you may try to learn the "vanishing point" method like most people (too lazy to type more about it here), but I'll say if you keep that "flat" looking as a style it's also fine, and I think the pic is colourful enough to make it interesting.

Thats great for a first try. It doesn't look too bad, but the only thing I can really say is the wall. It kindof looks like the leaves on a tree, with a window stuck in them. Other than that, not too bad at all.

I'd say the vertical dimension of the floor tiles should be noticeably less than the horizontal.  The way you have it now makes it look like the floor is simply part of the wall.  The tiles shouldn't be square, they should be rectangles.

EDIT: Ok, VERY quick and dirty paintover.  Please don't use this, it's not polished at all.  I just want to give you a general idea of the point I'm trying to make about perspective, because I don't know if my above explanation was clear.

PS: And by the way, I really like the style.  Very unique.  Go with it.

Its not bad. I think that if you learn to use perspective you could make some good backgrounds. At the moment it looks very flat.

evilspacefart

I would totally play a game with those backgrounds.
That's a unique style if you can keep it consistent throughout the game.

MrColossal

basically same thing remixor did

i tried to shallow out the counter top too

but anyway, awesome real awesome, i think the texture on the wall should be a little more faint cause i think it's a little distracting

did you paint that and scan it?

as for perspective:

there are other perspective tutorials out there but just check out 2ma2's and it'll be a good primer i think

Other than the perspective problems I have to say the style is kick arse...

Looks like watercolor

That be some awesome shit you got there!
Nice edit Eric!  :o

Inkoddi

It's surprisingly clean for being a slob's kitchen :P

Os Último Quão Queijo ^_^, I somewhat agree with you that the wall does slightly resemble leaves. I went a little crazy with the effect whlie trying to draw "water damage."

MrColossal, that's a really nice remake of my work. I was actually originally going to make the tile lines just like that, but then I realized with a perspective like that I'd also need to show a little bit of the right side of the fridge and I couldn't get it to look right. In your remake it still looks normal though. Also, I was trying to paint stove grills on top of the thing that currently looks like a dishwasher, but I couldn't get it to look right so if anyone would be willing to show me I'd appreciate it. Also, MrColossal, thanks for the link to the perspective info. I'll study that next time I want to draw a background. And no, I did not paint it and scan it. It was done digitally in Photoshop 7. I don't have a scanner.

Inkoddi, you are right. It is a little on the clean side in terms of a lack of objects. The reason for this, I can't draw. My real purpose in this was to test the style of coloring, and I was rather happy with it.
