This is my first attempt at making a character. I do not have any plans to use him, but if I did he would probably be placed behind a desk or bar.

I'm pretty happy with it, considering I've never drawn a person before, but something just isn't right about it...
What's wrong with it?

MrColossal

nice work, i think the one thing you could work on is the skin colour and hair colour

they're way to light in my opinion

i did a little edit but i don't want you to see it till you've worked on this yourself cause for a first try it's really good!

did you trace a photo for it or is it all you?

I traced a photo of my friend, because it was laying around on my computer. I think if I want to continue this way, I will use my digital picture and take pictures of myself in various poses.

I followed the tutorial here.

Also, I agree with you that the skin color is a little light. It was ok at first, until I added the adjustment layer to do the shading. I also forgot that my monitor is about 50% darker than other monitors, so I am sure that the skin is almost white on "normal" monitors.

I guess the hair is also a little light...

TheYak

Yes, he's nearly as pale as a mime.  Other than his vampiric good-looks, I think it's a very well-done character.  It has very good lines, is anatomically-correct (what we can see of him anyway) and has enough personality to portray a character in a game.

If I have to be nit-picky, I would up the contrast for the face/hair to be more in keeping with the suit.  There is shading there but perhaps if it were more defined or in higher contrast, it would look a little sharper.  The main reason for changing the skin color would be so that his facial features stand out.  Currently his features are a little "fuzzed" into his face.

Overall, excellent job, I give it an 8/10..being a first try, it gets a covetable 9.526/10.

MrColossal

hehe yea that's my tutorial glad to see you were able to create this from it

rotoscoping pictures of yourself would be quite interesting and from times i've seen this done an almost accidental style comes through the images.

it would also make animating easier cause you could pose in the extreme poses and just fill in the other frames

good luck with the rest woop woop

Yeah, I was already planning on posing in the various "key frames" that I would need, and then using them to easily draw and animate.

Anyway, I recolored the face a bit and reshaded.

So unless I can get a dedicated character artist for the project I am currently leading (Rolf und Joachim - A World War II Adventure), I will continue to make characters in this way. I have to first wait until the background artist makes some backgrounds so I can draw them to the right scale.

I like the first one, but with black hair...that would be a very mystic look

LordHart

Thats pretty good. I like the second better, but I would suggest making the shadows on the face slightly darker. Just a suggestion, but it isn't too much of a problem.
