I know, I know...it's annoying to see so many "firsts"...they are excuses for nothing. Nonetheless, it is :P
I really like the natural approach I get with the brushes...it seems to have capabilities for a lot of things completely impossible in Photoshop and I'm going to look into it for making dirty textures etc in addition to traditional painting...
One thing I am sorely missing from Photoshop is a Navigator window...the scroll bars are difficult for me especially with a Wacom, is there some equivalent thing I'm missing?

Simply keep one hand on your stylus and one hand near your space bar. With a quick tap of the space bar you turn your cursor into a "move canvas" hand and you can easily scroll around your drawing (very handy when zoomed in). Let go of the space bar and you can continue doodling. Try it! :D
AFAIK, there's is a Navigator Window in Photoshop, al least 7 and CS both have one.
You should be able to unhide it using the Window-menu.

The fact is, stuh505 is NOT using Photoshop, from what I understand. I think he's using Painter, but I'm just guessing (look at the Thread title.....)

They do wonders in Painter.

Right now I am VERY overwhelmed with the stock Painter brushes. I used only 2 or 3 brushes to make this painting. There are so many...and I don't really understand the difference between them all...I'm trying to experiment so as to learn more though.
I was thinking I would use a lot of artists oils but the texture on them becomes a real problem on detail work, so I switched over to acrylic. What brushes do other people use regularly?
good work the shapes in the branches are really flowing. the textured brush on the leaves doesnt fit well with the smoothness of the other part of the picture but i know why you used it.
Iif you add a fill to the canvas before you start painting or set the paper colour as a light shade of the colour you intend to use most in the picture, you may find working easier than painting straight onto white. ps, the wet soft acrylics brushes are great for painting skin, and the simple watercolour brush is fast and good at adding areas of shade. Keep it up!
