Tried to make midi music, and it ended up like this, quite crap as I say.

www.dsfilms.net/temp/MidiNew1.mid (New version)
www.dsfilms.net/temp/Midi1.mid (YeOldeVersio)

Some C&C would be welcome!

Sounds nice! The new one's ending somehow brings japan to my mind... :P
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

<Calin> Ishmael looks awesome all the time

nice first try, but it's to repeated, and way to random.

It has an oriental sound to it, that's true. :)

The rhythm seems ok, and there's a very classical way of beginning (one instrument, two instruments, three instruments, etc.). It's what I call the "Creed-way" of doing it. In 9 out of 10 of their songs, they begin the same way. :) I personally like a bit more variation in there.

The music sounds as if it will be background music during a certain puzzle screen. Is that right?

Also, you might consider adding a "theme" to it. Whilst I was listening to it, it felt like background sound. It didn't have a flute (for example) that played a particular tune. Right now it's just a scheme of chords... try composing a theme and placing it in there... You'll notice the variations are also easier to come up with then.

Good luck!

Thanks, yes it is. Well just learning to do things.

BTW, I have new version with some BangoBongo drums(?) and I will add the link once I got it sound right.

Hobbes: Thanks, yes, I will add a flute to it then ;)

The main issue as I see it, is that s it s very predictable at the moment, hence boring.

To make it more interesting you could:

(i) Make the melodyline less predictable.

Presently you re using a sequence (e, d, c, d, e, d, c) which is transposed downward then up again.

Using sequences is very important when making melodies; it s what makes them catchy. However in this case the sequence is not interesting enough to be used exclusively imo, at least not with the current harmonies/chordprogression.

So the main options would be:

___(i) Introduce something else besides the sequence in the melody: could be a modified version of the sequence or something completely new

___(ii) Change the rhythm of the sequence: at the moment eightnotes are only used (except one quarter).

(ii) Pan out the instruments

They re all centered at the moment which gives no width.

(iii) Let the instruments playing the melody play in harmonies

Here s an example demonstrating the points. I ve tried to change as little as possible:

(the cheesy string arrangement is there to show a chordprogression that could fit the slightly modified melody)

Hope it s of some use
