Title: First post...
Post by: NiNe-t-NiNe on Fri 22/04/2011 16:12:06
I've been a reader of this forum for years; this is my first time ever posting.  I have decided to take on the task of creating an adventure game.  The style was inspired by "The Shivah."  While  I am by no means a great artist, after playing it I figured I could at least do that.  I'm quite horrible with colors unfortunately.

The background is suppose to be set in the 1920s or so.  While posting this, I just realized I forgot to finish the background in the window.  Well, any critiques of this are welcome.

Not too bad at all. But personally I think it's a little empty. Maybe you could add a small table or something in the left corner with a plant on it for example? A doormat in front of one of the doors and maybe some mailboxes attached to the wall? Oh well...that's just what I think :D

Hello,

I'm not really an artist, but I can tell the roof is a bit strange. I hope you don't mind the quick edit, it's easier for me to explain it that way:

Not sure if this is the best way to fix it, but I hope you get the idea.

Otherwise it looks good to me, a few numbers on top of the doors would be nice since this is a Hotel.

Hi there, nice start, although don't think you can "do that at least", pixel drawing is harder than it seems at first.

There's been some good modifications since I started, so take them into account. You should decide if you want lights on walls or ceiling or both, if you want pattern on the floor, pattern on carpeted floor or maybe on wallpapers, check on the internet to see some examples.
Also, you didn's say if it's an apartment building or hotel (saw in the picture name it's a hotel) so you might want to put the number of rooms above the door instead, I think it's purely a design choice, not really that relevant. Also didn't know if you have a certain pallette you want to maintain, so I used the colors you had in the scene - that's why the plant and the table are that color.
Hope this gives you some ideas:

- fixed the window shadow a bit to match the window, but I'd make the window to be one part not seprated with that beam like that, it'd look more impressive
- change the shading on the inner door panels and door outline, look where the light is coming from, I think this might be better
- added plants, you can put lamps if you decide to put the lamps just on the ceilings
- changed the lamps, saw a couple of these on the net, I think it looks a bit more detailed
- added a radiator thingy at the end of the hallway

Nice choice of colors. I also like the use of repeated geometrical patterns. Smart simplicity.

Overall, very pleasant. Anian's version is even slightly better.

I think the door knob is on the wrong side.

I think the main thing I would mention is the lighting. Remember that light is generally coloured and that affects the surfaces.

Very quick palette edit:

This is a really nice background and the paintovers you are recieving are all adding to it in a positive way.

One thing that bothers me though is the way the back wall is outlined. Is there are reason why the pale pink colour extends to the skirting board at the corners? Why wouldn't the bottom part of it be red, like the striped part of the wall? If it were me, I wouldn't outline the wall at all and just colour the whole thing a shade darker than the side walls, (or vice-versa).

The window shadow is off...looks like you have four panes of glass in the window at the top....in the shadow on the floor you only have one beam going up...it should be more in the middle and also include two beams at an angle....

And maybe just to add alittle extra detail, maybe ?...add some molding at the top of the wall.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.  I also didn't mean to imply I could step right in and create great pixel art.

I knew it seemed rather empty, all the paint overs really help.  I wanted to add some plants to it, but I unfortunately don't really know how to do organic pixel art too well.  The plant paint overs really give me a good basis of understanding.  Those light fixtures are nice as well; they have a far better retro vibe to them.  I think I'll try to add a carpet and wallpaper design too.
