Made my first sprite tonight. I'm planning to do some shadowing later, but first i'd like to get the proportions at least somewhat right. I'm particularly unhappy with the feet and legs, but i can't quite figure out whats wrong... but i'd be thankful for any other c&c, too.

I was aiming for a slightly tilted angle (is that called isometric?), not too successfull, i think.
Hi!
First of all, I like the sprite, especially the jacket.
Things to improve:
*) The shoes look clumsy. You could make them 1 or 2 pixel thinner.
*) The color of the outline does not fit the fill color, especially the jacket and the hat. You could try to use less saturated outlines.
Here is a rough idea of where you could go with the legs:

A couple of points struck me about the legs on your image:
The legs apart as they are doesn't really work at this angle. It makes it look like his legs are really rather far apart. This is because from an angle, the far leg sits behind the near leg.
Boots do not strike me as the type of footwear a burglar (if this is in fact one) would wear. If you are going to draw boots, it looks a little odd having them both at the same angle and also having the trousers go into them in this way.
You're doing well - hope this helps.
How about making him a tad lighter? He looks a bit dark for me at the moment. But other than that he's pretty cool.
Yeah, it is pretty good for the first sprite. Instead of the legs, he looks to me like his head is too big in comparation to his torso, but that may be an aspect of your style, I don't know. The head also looks like it's a bit collapsed into his chest.
But these are a bit minor things, he looks pretty ok.
Keep it up, I like it!
Thanks for all the advice and kind comments.
I don't exactly intend for him to be a burglar in the end, but after experimenting a bit with boots on the corrected legs, i'm beginning to think that normal shoes fit better anyways. I'd like to continue work based on your edited legs, if i'm allowed to, Ben304.
I also tried re-positioning the head. Here's a comparison:

After that i thought maybe it would add to the sprites balance to move the legs equally to the head's new position, but I'm not quite sure about the result yet...

I also edited the outlines.

Go for it :)
I'd also like to toss in, if you want to keep the "boot" look instead of the shoe, it would help to make the tops of the boots appear to wrap around the leg, instead of just sitting in front of it.
Thanks for the hint, I gave the boots another try. Also did some shadowing.
Here's the current version:

Is the shadowing of the face too subtle? I tried to make it more contrasted before, but that brought pretty odd looking results.
what program did you use to make that sprite?
For the most time i used Paint.NET, although there were some operations (like moving around certain parts of the sprite) which i found not very convenient to do with that program, so i switched to the regular Windows Paint program for them.
The shading the jacket feels weird to me and I think his left arm (the one on the right side) is too far out from his body. Other than that the progression is good.
