Title: First sprite attempt
Post by: Cino on Mon 17/04/2006 14:50:15
This is my first sprite creating attempt and I wanted to be sure it's looking okay before animating it. I'm not much of an artist, so proper shading is quite a headache to me. Any help and/or comments would be appreciated.
It's supposed to be a worm-man kind of person, possibly a main character.

Looks good!

But I think the legs should be more straight on the front and back view..
(Think it will look better with the walk cycle......)

But other than that I dont know what you could change...

I really likes the way he looks ;D.
A GREAT first attempt!

Thanks for the suggestion, I moved the legs a bit closer.

Anything else?

Quite a respectable first attempt!

I would pay close attention to his lower body, specifically the differences between the front and back views.

Something else to consider is the length of the legs in relation to the torso.  The length of the torso should be shorter than the length of the legs.  I did a quick edit that may help you.  Very nice sprite!

Well, as he looks more like a Bone than a human, I don't see how proportion is so important. Portraying the volumes he has seems like a more pertinent focus. Unless of course he's just trying to make a Progz (tm) sprite.

When I mentioned the differences, I was mainly talking about the way his entire right calf is in shadow in both the front and the back views.

I don't see how this statement is appropriate or useful in any way.

When drawing characters that are taking on humanoid shapes and clothing, I think it's reasonable to think that the artist is interested at least to some degree in physical proportion.  Cino is the one who will ultimately decide whether a shorter torso looks good with his sprite or not, at any rate, so this discussion is rather pointless.

Thanks for the advice guys, I tried this and that and eventually decided to shorten the torso a bit, though not as much as ProgZmax. Also worked on the shades on the body like big brother suggested.

Thanks again, I guess I'll try to animate it now and see what happens.

For what it's worth I think he's adorable.

In regard to the perspective issue, I would normally agree that most cartoonish characters could benefit from some attention to perspective even though they're not meant to conform 100%, but because he's a worm... I don't know, having shorter legs and being a bit lower to the ground almost seems to make a strange kind of sense for him in particular.
