I've been experimenting with graphical style over the past year or so, and lately I've been inspired by "Squigglevision" cartoons like Dr. Katz, the first season of Home Movies, etc. Plus, I bought a new graphics tablet that's big enough I can actually use it.

I made a little mock-up in ags:

Or if you don't want to download the zip: (Just imagine the lines wiggling ;))

I've heard that this style in cartoons is distracting, Would this be too distracting for an AGS game? Opinions wanted :)

Armageddon

It's cute, you should try for a short game and see how people like it. The whole background moving like that would be cool. You should keep it that resolution and only let him walk left and right like that.

Ghost

I know a couple of carttons that use the effect, and in moderation it can really freshen up the visuals. Personally I like it less pronounced on background/objects, and a bit more noticeable on characters. Your example seems to be just the right amount- a fully realised room would be cool and allow for better feedback.

Bernie

I could totally get into a game looking like that. Seconding the full room example suggestion. :)

Thanks Armageddon, Ghost, Bernie!

As Ghost suggested I did a quick mock-up of a background less pronounced-ish. Updated the above zip.

Looks nice. I suggest you try to use the "moving" effect on (interactive) room objects- this'd signal the player that something can be interacted with, and it would further liven up the screen.
Anyways, the style is nice and I'd totally play a game with that look!

Thank ya Ghost, This is exactly what I was thinking as well. And the positive criticism so far has inspired me to move forward with the project.
