Title: Flame-thrower Nazi and dragon knight
Post by: CoffeeBob on Sat 15/07/2006 20:24:54
Hello there! It's been a while since I posted some of my work here. :P
I've improved my "l33t drawing-skillz" since last time I posted something hand-drawn.
Now, I've got two pieces for you to criticize. One which is a nazi-dude holding a flame-thrower (inspired by Wolfenstein somewhat), and the other is an unshaded sketch of a dragoon (or dragon knight if you prefer) holding a spear.

The proportions on the flame-nazi is way off, I'm well aware of that. I couldn't be arsed to change it after I was done with the sketch, so I kept it the way it was. He's also holding the flame thrower in a very weird way. :P
Oh, ignore the signatures. Dunno why I put them there in the first place.

um, its erm, fasinating, but what makes him a nazi? he just looks like a crazy bionical dude with a flame thrower to me.

Crazy bionical dudes are synonymous with nazis nowadays. Damn the youths :D. And on topic: You've got some fair colouring there, but otherwise I'd really suggest studying human anatomy. After some research and sketching with skeletons, you'll be surprised how realistic characters you can come up with. Also, from your signature, it seems that you do have a tablet. In this case, you really should enable pressure-sensitive thickness for your brushes. That'll help sketching and coloring a bunch.

Coolest thread title ever. When I saw this thread, I just HAD to check it out.

Anyway, you've got some wicked colouring going on there (the smoke is awesome!) but I'd suggest giving him more of a natural pose.

I couldn't paint over your one very well, coz I only use paint, so here's an original to give you an idea:

The colouring isn't flash (I don't think I need to show you how to do that) but I find that a pose like this says "Cool flame soldier" more than a rigid, feet together pose. And two flamethrowers just had to be done.

And if you are planning on using your work in a game, pixelled may be a tad easier to animate that hand drawn. Just some thoughts.

Huge heads, skinny bodies, weird muscles. These guys look like starving hobbits. The cyborg has strangely-shaped head too.

One more thing...
Anyone holding a flametrower would keep it as far away from his face as possible or he would have to wear a ski mask for the rest of his life. Since when do people give something that dangerous to a limping man? His robotic leg is longer that the other... What if he falls? Keep that in mind.

Thanks for all the comments and critique, guys. Didn't think there would actually be this many replies. ;D

@lo_res_man: Well, uhm. I dunno really. He was kind of meant to be a concept for a possibly upcoming Wolfenstein-mod. But I never did that mod, though.

@ildu: Thanks a lot for the advice. Actually, I don't have a tablet. I did the signature with a transparent brush. I'll consider getting one, though. It would be great to have one.

@Ben304: Thanks for the tips. I'm glad you liked the coloring, took me some time to do. :)

@Krysis: Starving hobbits? Now that you mention it, they do look odd. I've never studied human anatomy, so it was difficult to get them to look at least a little bit right. :P

Hmm, you've got a point there. I'll keep that in mind next time I draw a flame-thrower bearing nazi. ;D
