Title: Full Throttle-style backgrounds
Post by: Lucid on Tue 23/02/2010 14:02:10
Hello everyone!

So, I was making a fan game about Full Throttle, but without a 3D modeller it wasn´t possible. Then we changed to RPG, but that´s another story.

Here´s some of my old attempts to draw FT-style rocks and such...

What do you think?

I feel really REALLY bad for the dude who lives on the rock in bg #3, how does he get his groceries up there? I'll just assume there's an elevator installed in behind.

What really stands out to me is the lack of depth. Bg #2 really feels to me like there's a rock column in front of my face and another just behind it but they are very close to me and then there's just sky, and even that seems a bit flat.

If the mountains are to be in the mid ground try adding some foreground elements to give us a better sense of distance. A few rocks, maybe an old highway and a few cactuseseses. Spice up the area behind the mountain range with some more mountains but fade them out a bit.

Ooooh, I just found a killer piece of reference! http://www.gamekicker.com/files/Full_Throttle_-_large.gif (http://www.gamekicker.com/files/Full_Throttle_-_large.gif) Check out how the clouds are done, they give a great sense of how massive the area is.

That's all I got.

I'm guessing you're working off this (http://www.adventureclassicgaming.com/index.php/gallery/image/2908/) piece of concept art, if so I'd say pay more attention to the details of the rock. Add more highlights and shadow; at the minute you just have one big perfectly smooth rock.

This (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/full-throttle/screenshots/gameShotId,4547/) is also a good reference for the kind of rock banding you'd expect to see.

You can also see how the objects in the far distance give the image a sense of depth, which is also something you should seek to replicate. At the minute, the images look very flat.

I might be able to do some 3D cliffs for you if you like..but try working in 2D first..it's more satisfying to get it right :D

Huh, to be honest, it's quite bad.

All I could suggest is to study some photos of real rocks and take notes.

Try to give more depth to the rocks. Rocks have random shapes, and light hits every bit of it in a way.

Here, i made a real quik example in paint to explain better:

I may have gone a bit overboard on the shapes thought :P, but i think it explains whatI'm trying to say

I quite like that, it's exactly what Lucid needs to incorporate. Nice paintover.
