Hey, I'm working on this jungle scene.  I am not looking for any C&C, but rather, suggestions on what I should do to make it more like a cartoonish alien jungle.  In this jungle the flora IS ALSO the fauna...most of the plants can move around, etc.  Sort of like the jungle from Dark Crystal.

I'm not sure if I should use a lot of hand-drawn textures rather than just colors because I don't want to take away from the cartoon feel but I things aren't right so, any ideas how to achieve that cartoonish feel?

Daz

it looks great and a good idea.

to make it more cartoonish maybe up the contrast and make the lighting a bit less dramatic, thats all i can think of right now.

hope it helps.

do you guys think i should use an effect like this?

Andail

I've always enjoyed cartoonistic effects in 3D, and I think you carry it out pretty well...the only thing I can think of is that a jungle would have much denser foliage, and more...well, things...your scene looks like arbitrary objects sparsely positioned on a grass lawn far too neat for being a jungle.

Also, the background could have some sort of dark green-brown texture instead of just black. Just my opinion, of course :)

stuh505

yes...it is difficult to make the jungle look full, especially without making render time horrendous (the cartoon animations are much more time consuming).

TheDude

I think the cartoon effect on the models closer to the foreground work great (those 2 blue flowers look very cool), but as the models get further away the black outline seems to get thicker and it doesn't look so pretty.

stuh505

ok...ive been playing around with the settings (very slow with the high render time) and this is as good as i can do to have the background lines thinner...what do you think

stu

try turning the ink off...

also, i think you need something at the base of the trees, like a little bunch of grass or something.. it looks weird when they're just sticking out the ground like that.

Kweepa

I thought it looked better with even line thicknesses.
You could render foreground and background separately with slightly thinner lines for the background and composite them in Photoshop.
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Synthetique

Yea.. make the ground more interesting... like grass and stuff..
