Title: Game Art
Post by: George on Tue 21/12/2004 09:21:12
I'm b-A-ck!

In a unique blend of commitments in school, out of school, indulgence in my painting and forgetfulness, I have not posted in these forums in a while… I have made a handful of games but were used purely for testing matters, thus unsuitable to post as games.

Enough about that… here I have artwork for my upcoming game, all I need you to do is see if the in game character resembles my preconceived art of him and tell me how to make them more similar. I'll be posting more art as it comes by.

Oh raining hell from above! I posted a BMP! For future reference, how do I convert them to JPG's or something like that?Ã,  ???

On the close up of the face, the head is facing forwards while the face is looking somewhere else, just shift the ear a bit further back and some other minor changes and it should be ok.

Really nice, but I think you can increase the characters' width by 1 or 2 pixels for the front and side views as the side vies made him look a bit bigger in size in my opinion.

If your painting/scanning/cooking/whatever programme cant do that for you, you can just download one of those free viewer/converter programmes that can do this for you, one example is www.irfanview.com (http://www.irfanview.com), you may find more great programmes link in this thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=5644.0) also.

Yeah, I will shift his ear back a bit but the position of his eyes is intentional, like a curious glance to the side.

I'll try adjusting his side view, it's his beard you see, makes his neck look really fat while it's actually normal  :-\

When I post next, I'll use the newer non-BMP image but where on www.irfanview.com do you download or access that option of converting images?

You'll have to download & install the whole prog.

Or just try GIMP (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html), its free and simply great.

Here's a quick example how you can easily fix problems without much editing: the ear is actually in the right position (except it's a bit small), but his back-head is too wide.
Nice pic, btwÃ,  :)

My God! IrfanView Rocks! Why didn't I see this earlier!?
Here is more game art for you to crit. And if anyone makes the connection between this art and that of yahtzee's “5 Days a Stranger” I know… it's in the eyes… after making them I thought they looked familiar.

Quite possibly the main character's Boss…
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Boss_2.png)

Boss' secretary…
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Secretary_2.png)

Some Federal Agents…
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Federal_2.png)

And a skeleton thrown in for good measure…
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Skeleton_2.png)

You may ask yourself… “How do these characters tie into one another?” just don't ask me because even I have no clue.Ã,  ???

P.S: this'll be my last post for a while since I have family Christmas preparations going on at the moment.

I like the sprites.  ;D

I quite like the sprites- you have excellent pixel skills, George! That skeleton rocks my socks.

However, there were a couple of points on the seceratary that I had trouble with. Mine's on the left, yours is on the right

1. Anti-grav boobs might be cool, but they honestly look painful. Someone could lose an eye on one of those  :o  On the profile view, I moved the chest in by one pixel, and added an extra pixel just below the breast.  This gives a bit of a smoother line, more like what would be seen on a tailored women's blazer.

2. The shoulders and arms were at a very strange angle. The arms should hang straight down, rather than being held slightly away from the sides.  This wasn't possible in your original drawing, which I shall elaborate on in point 4. To fix this, I widened her shoulders a bit, and narrowed the behind- but as I said, more on that in point four.

3. This lady has very little waist. There is no curve to the spine on the side views, and the front and back views are very straight and square in this area.  I put a bit of an indent at the small of the back on the side view, but the main change was created by step 4.

4. This was the main problem area. This lady has a HUGE bottom.  It didn't really match the fact that she is otherwise very skinny and her clothes are quite tight. On the side view, I raised the curve by several pixels- she's got a bit of a curve to her, but it seems to match the rest of her physique a bit better. On the rear view (no pun intended... oh who am I kidding? I SO did that on purpose) I got rid of the curve all together. Having even a pixel of curve looked really silly. If I could add a half pixel, that would be about right. But that isn't possible, so  the back remains curveless. Besides, a straight skirt would hang down directly from the hips, so it's all good.

Yes, I'm being picky, but your drawings are good enough that there's only picky stuff left to fix. You get a gold star.

Gah! I knew the boobs looked too big! A friend of mine said that if I took one pixel layer off them, they'd look too small, just goes to show… so don't get the wrong impression… :-[

And as for the other points, you see, the template from which she was made was originally that of a male, so maybe the features that were made to cover that matter up were too drastic.

Yes and I will improve on such points, thanks.

I'd also add that hands are way too short in all cases, both sketch and sprites.

Just try it - when you keep your hands hanging rested, they get very close to knees, hands reach/cover about half to 3/4 of thighs, depending on human.

On your pictures, hands are about crotch height or on first quarter of a thigh. And that's short.

Also, feet are too long. On sprites, it's just matter of 2-3 pixels, on man sketch, much more.

Actually, there's a neat trick about foot length. Due to the magic of foreshortening, we think our feet are much shorter than they really are. If you measured your feet, you'd find that they are approximately the length of your lower arm (from the inside of your elbow to your wrist).

You wouldn't believe the sort of contortion I had to get myself in to see if you were right, Big Brother, but yes indeed, you are correct. Now if only I could get out of this position. Um. Help?
