Title: Gnome WIP
Post by: JimmyShelter on Wed 13/12/2006 21:09:34
After my troll, I decided to give him a friend: a gnome.

It's still in a very early phase.

I'm not to happy with his face: he looks to 'evil'. I wanted him to have sharp features: pointy nose and chin, but still look friendly, maybe a bit mischievious.
His posture also seems a bit stiff.

I really like the sprite! Looks even better than the troll you drew. I like 'em both! I just think that they lack contrast a bit, especially the gnome guy's head. So I made a little paintover. Just adjusted some colors and added some simple shading here and there. I hope it helps.

I also raised his eyebrow just one pixel. I think it makes him look friendlier since you thought that he looked a bit evil. :P

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Pablo, very nice edit.

I knew the contrast was a problem. I was waiting with the shading until I was more satisfied with the rest of the sprite, but it's very cool to see what some simple shading can do with a sprite.

Any idea how to give the guy blond hair, without having a lack of contrast?

The answer is quite simple- so simple in fact that someone else had to give it to me: You use the main blonde tone for the bulk of the hair, and do outlines in an orange-brown tone. That worked well for a character of mine, just give it a shot. You might want to test several different tones, and take care that the outline colour is noticeably darker than the "main" hair.

Just check my banner for what I mean- that's the character I'm talking about  ;D

Here's my shot at it:

I'm not 100% happy with him but it's getting really late here and I'm off to bed now.

Here you go, I kept the general pose the same and went with a few colors and highlights.

1.  Made facial features more prominent and exaggerated the anatomy (hands and feet) to match the size of the head.

2.  Reshaded to bring out the shapes.

Hopefully this will help.  Nice work so far!

Thanks for all the comments and paintovers.

I tried to learn something from all your ideas, and I hope this is an improvement:

I changed his posture and features somewhat. I made his chin less pointy making him look somewhat friendlier, and I hope his arm looks better now.

Edit:
Another edit, I gave him some other clothes. I tried to give the clothes a more victorian look and feel. Like a Dickensian paperboy. So he looks more in line with the steam punk theme I want to give my future game.

Any thoughts?

Looks good. The face is now like the puppets in "the dark crystal" film, if thats what your going for.

Now you mention it, it does look like a Dark Crystal puppet right now.  ;D

Anyone got an idea how to make the collar of his white shirt to look better? It doens't really look like the collar of a shirt now.
