Title: Grim Fandango graphics
Post by: on Fri 16/07/2004 20:14:38
I'm working on a Grim Fandango 2 fan game and was wondering if any one else has ever created there own versions of the games graphics or perhaps a gui system.

Couldn't be done in AGS.
There's no AGS type adventure game engine that supports that kind of graphics at the moment unfortunately.
You'd have to code the engine yourself or do a lot of scripting in a general purpose 3d game engine.

What I mean is has any one tried to creat there own 2D versions of the graphics.
I understand that theres isn't realy a good chance for creating a full 3D game in AGS.

Ah, what you mean is, has anybody ever tried to recreate the style in 2D?

Monkey Island 3, the Restaurant on the first Island... has a 2D Manny, LucasArts style.

don't know if this is what you mean. I just traced over a 3d sprite t o make it 2d.  it just gives an idea of the style y'know

Woah.
If I had a plot, a gui, and a reason for manny to come back to the land of the dead, I'd make a gf game tomorrow.

What about just a reason for Manny to go to the land of the Dead in the first place? ....Eh?

If it were me, I'd make him in 3d and use rendered 2d sprites.. but I know how to use a 3d prog, so that probably wouldn't work for you.

If you really wanted to be true to the original, there is a free 3d game engine that could do it, though you'd really need to learn to do the graphics yourself.

Well, in Grim Fandango, the main character, Manny, was *living* in the Land Of The Dead. Then at the end of the game, he went to Heaven ( I forget what its refered to as in the game).

How about not doing a grim fandango 2!!!

The game had a solid ending... no need for a sequel.

Unless you were to make a spin off.

Which would be alright.

Who said that it must be about Manny if it's going to happen after the game? It could be a new travel-agent who gets into a new corruption or whatever. If there's going to be Manny in the game then you can't make a story after the game. Either before the game or between the years.

Or it could be about Glottis trying to get Manny back? Anyway, I found this site a while back, it's some Grim Fandango scripts.

Hm...
I don't remember the ending of the game werry well.
This may sound like a stoopid idea but how about bringing many to life and make a grim fandango story BEFORE the original...

Well there are another site with fanfics of stories between, before and after Grim Fandango. There's an interresting one which happens between Year 2 and Year 3 (the travel from Rubacava to Puerto Zapato).

Here's the adress: http://lucasfic.mixnmojo.com/fanficn.htm

Ok, I'm making a fan sequal to Grim Fandango.
I'll give you what I have so far, but it's still a work in progress.

As we all know Manny went to Heaven at the end of the game.
This is where my story will take place.  Manny is in his paradise and awaiting his new life, (I have created a few versions of what I feel Manny may look like allive)
Manny goe's through his portal and into his new life, but as manny's portal is opening on the other side, a misterious figure is floating around in the shadows.
Manny crashes to the ground, do to the wrong position of his portal, and takes a look at the area around him (a tropic island, manny will be standing next to a small overhang)
As Manny is marveling at his good looks, more or less his skin, a large rock is hurled down of the overhang crushing Manny.

You play as Manny Calavera, but this time you are not the travel agent.
Wallice, a dimwitted agent of the DOD is on your side to take you to the number nine.  But there seems to be a larger and more evil power in the streets of the Dead,  and Manny must uncover the mystory of why he is back in the land of the dead.

so this is what I have so far for the opening of the game.
I'm working on Curse of Monkey Island style GUI system right now,  but for the commands I still want a the coin look but more bone like and less piratie.

the mi3 verb-coin has already been scripted, you could look for a template or smth on some sites...

I know I allready have the CM gui but I'm just doing a paint over for a different look, I allready have the inventory but right now I'm trying to creat a verb coin but can't realy make one that looks good.

a mix between CMI and the FT gui could be cool. Your plot sounds really good, I wish you good luck mate. can we see some of your designs?

EDIT: HAHAHAHA! A fine example of our moderators working together. Mods moves it to critics and Andail moves it right on back. Good work! Made my day

Hang on. Wait. Stop. Rewind.

Your design, besides that it is in BMP format, is just Zooty's sprite. The very same one he posted, pretty much. Except with a head on it.

Also your Manny Face...It's good and all, but I don't think it captures Manny.

I have not played Grim Fandango (gasp!) but I happen to like the faces as well.  I assume that there's some reason he needs to redeem himself later, so perhaps give him a more "honest Pete" look to him, rather than simply the wholesome grin he has now.

I could be wrong, but did we ever find out why Manny was stuck working at the DOD in the first place? And as far as I remember we find out absolutely nothing about his life. I keep trying to replay it, but it crashes all the time on xp.

They are ,my sprites. Gasp! I can identify the shoes sir! don't worry about it. i did it to be used.. I don't care what for. I like the face but as has been said before, its not manny

Post by: DanClarke on Mon 19/07/2004 19:26:56
i dont think its the graphics that are so much a problem, its the actual plot and script you'll struggle to even touch. Grim Fandangos strongest point was the story, and the way it was told. You'd have to have some serious talent to even come close to that.
Title: Re: Grim Fandango graphics
Post by: DanClarke on Mon 19/07/2004 19:28:11
also, after seeing your sprites, i dont think manny's teeth have to be exposed when he was alive, as chances are he had lips to cover them.

Good point.

I always wondered, why did Manny, (and Eva, Dom, and Copal for that matter), take a job at the DOD instead of going to Heaven?

It may have been explained somewhere in-game, I forget.
Title: Re: Grim Fandango graphics
Post by: Sluggo on Tue 20/07/2004 00:09:35
Well they had to take those jobs because they apparently did something bad in life that prevented them from going to the 9th underworld (not really heaven, since there's no hell as far as I know). What they did though is beyond me.

Look, I'm asking you bloodnose, don't make a GF sequel.
It's nothing against you, it's just that because I believe that even if you take the forum's most talented scripter, most talented artist, most talented coder, most talented musicman, most talented storyboarder, you won't get something even close to what GF was.
Yes I know it's just a fan-game, but I really don't want there to be a sequel, I'd rather leave it my imagination ...
So I ask you again, PLEASE don't make a GF sequel ...

agreed. I presume this is your first AGS project? Almost every single newbie thinks "I'm gonna make the ultimate (MI, GF, FT, Indy, DOTT) Sequel and people are gonna praise me forever  more". I did. But it just doesn't work. UNless you have a large skilled team of experienced agsers (eg. foy) then your chances of success are minimal. Come up woith your own plot and characters. Your art is good and you could show it off better in your own setting. GF was one of my all time favourite games with a great ending. DOn't ruin it for everyone.

If you don't want to play a Grim sequel, then don't. Problem solved.
Bloodnose, do whatever you want - it'll be a learning experience :)

Besides, sounds like he wants to do a prequel.  :)  If its a good idea, it will survive.  If its a bad idea, it'll die like Royal Quest. (hopefully)

Please.
No sequel. No prequel.
Because if you make it, I'll have to play it, but I won't want to.

GF was...elegant. NO fangamer could ever hope to capture that.

Don't worry there is only about a .0001% chance of him actually doing it...

Like how many announcements of games do we have here and how many get finished...

I hear you man, but if you don't want...... don't play it.  If he makes it, maybe it'll make him happy.  I mean no one HAS to play any game right.

That said, yeah making a GF sequel........ WHEW!!!! GOOD F'N LUCK.

He he, indeed it seems as Mods and I disagree about the fate of this thread :)

To me, this just seems like a rather unserious discussion about a fan-sequel that will unlikely see the light of day.
Moreover, the thread was started without some sort of material to give c&c on, something that goes against the critics lounge regulations.

Then again, a picture did appear all of a sudden, further into the thread, so Mods has a point after all.

I have finished Manny, well just his normal walking views and what not.
I do understand why most of the fans don't want another GF game, more or less a fan game, but I am going to make it.  No matter how corny or cheesy it is, I'm working out some bugs with the gui and right now I'm shooting for a short demo that I can expand from.

and as for manny's face I will try to modify it as much as I can, at first I was shooting for a mix between Marco de Polo (monkey island 4) and Tony Plana (the voice of Manny)

As for this thread I will be posting more about my advancements with this project in AGS Games In Production.
