Dude, post something that took you longer than 2 minutes. This is the critics lounge.

Ok We're gonna need a lot more to actually accomplish anything here eg
The style you are aiming for
A feel for the room you are creating

Well here's a little tip, if you go over your lines more and more, and they're wrong to begin with, it only makes them stand out even more.  If you make a mistake, do NOT go over it again and again, it doesn't make it better.

When I first started drawing, I would lay a few lines down, maybe a skeleton of what I wanted, and then be afraid to continue...don't be, add more, if it looks bad so what, it'll get better over time etc etc.  Just keep drawing, it takes time and experience.

Think of things to add, like a clock, a bookcase, a fireplace, a giraffe, anything.  Maybe look at some photos to help with drawing things like beds and windows, but keep at it.

Another thing, you said you tried various things that turned out bad? Did you spend two hours on something that didn't turn out? Maybe you should show that instead of this 'outline'?

Anyway good luck.

If you really want to try hand drawn style, you should actually draw on paper and scan it.  I know that I'm more comfortable doing base or lineart on paper first before coloring and editing in the computer; maybe it's the same for you.  With that said, to me that picture doesn't look like hand drawn or even sketchy.  It looks sloppy.  One reason is because you keep going over the same lines over and over when real artist can do sketches without resorting to that.  If you want a more sketchy style, focus giving more strength and expression.  If you're uncomfortable about drawing things perfectly in one go (something that most people can't do, including me), draw the shape very lightly first before proceed any further.  This way you can make corrections quite easily before you're totally set on the final product.  This technique also works in the computer.  You can use lighter color lines or use different layers for "sketch" and "finished lineart."

It's really much easier with a pencil on actual paper. This sketch took about three minutes; you can doodle several dozens of those and finally settle for one you like.

Adventure game backgrounds are "bastard architecture" because you will often need to tweak rooms so that they are playable- walkable areas of the right size, perspective fixed to avoid too much scaling and so on.

Start with a few lines that define the room's walls- this will help you to line up furniture. In most cases you will use 1 point perspective.

Add furniture as "blocks" and then refine those blocks. The bed starts as a simple box, then you can easily cut and add to that box to create a shape. Then add a pillow and a sheet, and that's it.

Objects on the wall will usually align to their wall edges; this creates a more realistic "perspective", even if you exaggerate it.

Make sure to have something for players to look at in your rooms. Pictures on the wall, texture and some "sensible" things like electric plugs or just a shelf full of books. Keep in mind that players will look at those backgrounds for a long time.

Oh- and always add a lava lamp  ;)

Some people draw their BGs completely on paper and then just scan them and correct some mistakes that does not look good and that's it. Maybe this is a way for you...

Btw I LOVE lava lamps, gotta buy me one when I move. Gonna get me a purple one.....I'm getting mad.....
