C&C walkcycle and static *plz c&c walk cycle

Hi!

This was my first attempt of a sprite for ags, took me agges. Its susposed to be an investigator wearing a trenchcoat.




Im poor at animating so i cant make him walk yet :( but ill have a another go when ive got some feedback about how to improve.

You should be able to cut the color count in half without really losing any of the detail or personality.

What stands out to me is that the curve of the brim of the hat aligns perfectly with the width of the face - it makes it look like he's blindfolded under his hat.
If you offset the pixels a bit it will help I think.

Also, he seems to be wearing a black tshirt under his trenchcoat. That looks out of place. Perhaps a white shirt, with the knot of a tie, would fit better. You've got plenty of pixels in there to play with!

Finally from me, his hands are quite "legoman".

I think the hat shouldn't be so round and the coat should be longer. White shirt and dark tie are also needed, I think. I can't paint what I mean, so image 1 and image 2
These are a from a film noir (your typical investigator with trenchcoat).

Thanks. Ive tried to do those improvements. The hardiest things are the hat and hands. And his coat looks a bit rigid.

He looks like he's dancing in the walkcycle. If he's supposed to walk that fast, then make the steps longer, otherwise at least make it slower...

(Edit): Oh wait, the two walkcycles are different. The smaller one has a weird pause in there.

Oh, and I just realized, if he's not supposed to walk so fast, lessen the elbows' jumping. He should keep them more relaxed and loose if he's walking casually...

Indeed -- with all the emphasis being on upper body movement, he looks to be dancing. You may want to try raising the feet a bit more, bending his knee on the back swing and showing the bottom of his shoe a touch on the front swing.

At least, that's what I'd try.

I'm also JUST noticing the grey on his face, despite having looked at thje sprite several times. If you want the "5-o'clock shawdow" to be a bit more obvious, it should probably be darkened up a bit.

Furthermore, the top of the hat does bug me. Take a peek at the film noir hat pics that were presented and you'll see that those hats' tops are more square than round.

BAH! I just went ahead and did an edit:



-shortened and "squared" hat a bit, and gave it a dent on the top
-dropped the belt a bit
-darkened stubble
-made a dark line under hat brim -- meant to be a shaded area from the hat, but it wasn't working out all that well...
-simplified/ flattened colours a bit here and there
-messed around with his arms/ the edges of his torso, making his toso look more tapered
-added cuffs to his sleeves
-re-did hands in a very simple way, since you didn't like yours -- they're simple, but they may just work, especially at this size
-shifted his skin colour toward red a bit
-rounded his shoulders a bit
-lengthened the coat a touch

I might have done more... I'm not sure.

IMO the bottom of the trenchcoat is too square.  I mean, it's perfectly straight.  Maybe you could curve it a bit or something...it just looks unnaturally straight.  Either that or there's about a pound of starch in it. :=

I personally had thoughtthe same thing -- but I tried a few things and found it surpisingly hard to unstraighten and still have it look "right", given so few pixels to play with. Then again, I'm frikkin' horrible with smallish sprites.
