Title: Help With Character Design
Post by: Dervish on Sun 24/05/2009 18:08:54
I recently posted a demo for everyone to play and have had some comments about the main characters design.

Overall I am fairly happy with the look the only thing that bugs me is the front view.  so maybe yall could help.  Feel free to paint over and change it however you wish.  Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't tried the demo and would like to here is the post for that

I dig the black/white idea, but the finished product looks so processed it loses it's feel. I'd maybe clean up some of the grayish spots and make it strictly black antialiased lines. The side views look pretty good, other than the feet look a little bulbous. I like the profile of the face, very melancholy. The back view looks okay too, but the feet look like they're pointing up. I like the V on the back of the coat, but the length doesn't match the side views. The back of the coat should be higher than the front of the coat.

The front view looks strange because of the head proportions. I drew some lines to show continuity between shots. One of the front views is aligned to the head, the other to the eyes. I did an edit of the front view next to a side view, just to clean the head proportions up a bit.

There's something messy with the arms, in the front view. Looking at what you did for the back view, his right arm should be longer in the front view. The other one has a strange shape, I suggest you straighten it up a bit, or maybe put his hand in a folder.

Ya that was mainly my gripe, his feet and arms.  Evil did a good job with the feet on his edit.
But those arms on the front view really need to be lengthened.  The hands appear to be at the belt level when they really should be close to the crotch level (like the side view).

He looks like a loser. Give him more evil eyebrows, long and strong neck, higher raised collar, lift pants up a bit and make shoulders wider. Wouldn't hurt to make hand more muscular and longer aswell.
And overall height is out of porportions. Use a photo of standing man as reference to correct it.
Also, remove random lines from pants. They resemble nothin like real shading/wrinkles.

2 colors? Take a photo and apply threshold filter.
Then draw his face accordingly. Like my avatar. You will get much more serious, realistic look.
