Raider

Hey all,
First oF all you will have to excuse my capital F's. My computer makes a & instead oF a little F.
Anyway...

Here is a character For my up and coming game.
He is supposed to be a maFia thug with little inteligence, but have style.
What do you think?
I can't get the hands right, any suggestions?

RyRayer

I just made a quick edit with MS Paint. I didn't change his hands, but I suggest you to add thumbs.

Raider

Thanks for the suggestion but it's not what i'm looking for...
I'm going for the sort of stocky no-neck thug look.

(I fixed the "f" problem) if any one cared... 8)

Haddas

I made a quick dirty edit to show my version of him. I suggest you save all your work as .png if you post it online, as it has the perfect quality for sprites and backgrounds.

Mozesh

I 'also' made a quick edit focusing more on his stance.

Abisso

Haddas' edit's the best till now.

Anyway, mafia members are not really like this. At all. But I admit that this is probably the image you get from movies and games, and so the most popular one, too.

I think the position of Haddas' edit-hands is the right one, but it would be better to draw closed fists. And he really needs a neck. Short, maybe, but he needs one. And some shading, too.
Welcome back to the age of the great guilds.

Raider

ok.. I took the ideas of all of the paintovers and came up with this...

Still can't get the hands or shoes right.  :-\

Mozesh

Here's another edit:

I changed the hands and added a neck.
And please upload a pic with a light background, I almost couldn't find the feet.

Raider

Everyone seems to be insisting me to put a neck in  :)
Do you think it really looks bad without one? Or are they just suggestions.

RyRayer

No, it's looking fine without neck. That makes it more cartoonish.

Darth Mandarb

I'd also suggest steering away from adding a neck.  This looks much more 'thugish' to me this way.

I would also suggest you take Redrum's advice on the stance to make it more natural looking.

The biggest problem I can see (which has stuck through all the paint-overs) is lack of pectorals.  He has huge arms/shoulders that dominate his upper body almost no mass to his chest.  It looks odd.

Here's a quick paint-over:

Hope it helps.

Raider

Hey thanks Darth for the idea...
I came up with this (with white BG ;))

I'm trying to come up with a name for him...
I have been thinking "Tony Visser"  :-\

Abisso

Is he going to be an american or italian "mafioso"? This influences the name's choice.
Welcome back to the age of the great guilds.

Raider

I think American, with Italian blood. So a bit of both if that is possable.

Abisso

What about:

-Vittorio Puccini
-Danny Palermo
-Don Nicolone
-Vincent Cicci

Not sure if they work, cause I'm just guessing how a south-italian surname can be transformed to get an American feel.
Welcome back to the age of the great guilds.

InCreator

Okay, I drew your thug over and since I made copies in progress, I'll explain what I did think during editing. Refer to numbers.

1.Your orignal - "Whoa, That's quite cool guy we have here. Nicely done, only 3 colors and so much character! Let's see if we can improve it...

2.Changed mouth - "This warcry-look on his face looks llike he's 18, insanely happy and killing ninjas with minigun. We should change it to more serious to fit with his overall look... Yes the hair should be tighter too... Some wrinkles near nose will make his face more Arnold Schwarzeneggerly(sp?  :P)... Also, make him older and fit more with fat neck..."

3.More wrinkles, no beard. - "Ooh, the wrinkles are good! Let's make some more...! What's this beard? Only rapmetal artists and college rockers wear ape-like beards. Naah, it won't fit here, since we made him older. Middle-age, elegant thugs don't look like highschool skaterboarder punks! The nose should be massive and bigger too. The shades look too weird, maybe few pixels would improve them... And the hair change, it makes them even more messy, and it's BAD, because...."

2.Final - "...this guy is wearing an elegant suit. There's no way that this guy hasn't been introduced to comb, so we REALLY have to do something with hair. More hair, shaded hair and not-so-box-head-in-1! Huh, it lost some comic effect now, but it's compensated by realism. Also, let's totally fix the shades, the holders go behind ears and nose section isn't so long... What now? Sylvester Stallone grinâ,,¢, of course! :="

Okay, I most likely went overboard and my edit's way too different from your original, but atleast I had fun. :D

Rock on!

Raider

haha Thanks InC!
I will take your versions and update mine, I like the hair on example 4.
I will draw him soon!  ;D

I don't want to be a downer, but a "visser" is an alien from a book series I read. It's really something that only a fan of the book series would know, but if you don't want people to think about the vissers from the books, then I suggest not using visser as a name. If you don't care, it's not a huge deal. Just thought you might want to know this, just in case people think your character is one of the vissers of the series and ask you about it.

Unless... he is?  ;)

Visser really sound bad to me... what about something similiar like Vissano or Vissani? (it is a real italian surname)
