Title: Help with my zombie guy sprite.
Post by: SookieSock on Tue 19/01/2010 01:57:24
Hello everyone!

I've been working on this sprite and i was just wondering if someone could give me some tips on how to improve it.

I'll include the concept art too  ;D

Looks rad :D.

A couple of things to keep in mind for lower resolution sprites:

-The less colours you use, the less time you are going to spend doing each frame of animation, and the 'cleaner' your sprite will look (to an extent, obviously a 1 colour sprite is going a bit far).
-When doing shading in low res you're not mixing colours like you do when painting, but try to keep in mind your lightsource's hue. For example, your concept art has warm highlights, but your sprite's highlights are the same hue as the shadows and midtones. Making your highlights warmer in hue and your shadows cooler in hue can help create a more interesting palette.

Here's a quick example that hopefully helps to demonstrate some of this

The left one is basically with a cleaned up palette (I didn't get all of the shades that I should have done, so the colour count is still a bit too high, but it should give a quick idea of how to simplify for animation), and the right one has the colours adjusted ever so slightly to show a shift in hue from your shadows to highlights.

Hope it helps, or at least provides some food for thought.

Thanks for the help. I took your advice and tried to update the sprite.

I think he looks quite good and is instantly recognizable from the concept art.  I'd like to see how he stands to the side since his arms from the front suggest a slouch (they appear to be hanging very loosely).  Nice work!

Looks good.

The concept art looks vaguely Johnny Depp/Chocolate Factory as well as Zombie, very cool! ;D

Great stuff.
One thing: the tear in the right trouser-leg seems to look bigger from the side.
