I've been really busy recently but in my free moments I've been messing around with Blender (mainly because I'll do anything if shbazjinkens suggests it often enough).
I've also just played Escape from Monkey Island and wasn't happy with the characters' graphics so I thought I'd attempt a low-poly cartoonish character to see if I could produce something I liked.
I know low-poly 3D characters have no real application in AGS, and this isn't expressely for a game, but I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have all the same.

(Obviously this is just a basic pose. Try to imagine him in a spouse-murdering frenzy - ta.)
I like it, add some thick eyebrows you can use for emotional state and clear up the textures and it's a winner.
Daww, cute li'l murderous monarch! I love him, but I agree with Prog. Eyebrows are needed for every face!
Really? My eyebrows are very pale - to the extent that people think I don't have any. That's why I always look surprised.
Still... I'll get on with giving lil' Henry some of the old brows.
I love him! And you could make a game in AGS using 3d-characters. Just pre-render all the animaions and import them as images! With this kind of models it'll be great!
Of course it would be better to use it as 3d was used in Grim Fandango and MI4, but that won't be possible until AGS version 5 is released ;)
Or you could use Wintermute o_0
Here's the wee fella with eyebrows. Being the Mr T of monarchs, I also gave him some bling... but I'm not sure about it.

The textures are fuzzy because this is a screen-grab from the real-time rendering of Mr H. They're even fuzzier on this picture because of the .gif dithering. They'd be sharp if it was pre-rendered. If there's a way of upping the quality in blender I'd appreciate any tips.
i really really like the new model, looks very cool. I game in this style would be lovely. If you can make bgs to go with it, you got yourself a winner.
Just a suggestion for the jewelery. Henry is usually shown with a chain on his shoulders like so, (http://www.wyldeside.com/faire/ontrf1998/ontrf98_45.jpg) rather than the solid neck thing you have now.
I don't know for sure, but something like that might be a bit easier to place on the character than the solid one you have now. I can see a gap between the shoulder and the jewelery.
I absolutely LOVE the little hat.
Why make a Henry VIII game? I mean, by the time they get to 8th installment, those sequels get pretty predictable.
His sooo cute. I love this, amazing work. ;)
He needs fingers! For a LOT more jewellery- rings. The eyebrows are really nice, you even placed them in such a way to make him look royally unamused.
I don't know about fingers. Its simplicity is part of its charm. I think the H collar bling is really funny, too. Just from looking at the sprite I can tell that historical accuracy isn't the priority, so take liberties with the details.

Hahah, that's awesome!
I like the cartoony style but I wonder, didn't Henry the VIII have any nose or is he suppoused to have no nose? And what about ears?
Also I think the shoes look more like horsefeet.
No fingers, no nose! He is the height of perfection!
It's like the original Pacman... you give him eyes and then you have to give him ears, hair, glasses, a beard. By adding detail, you can lose sight of the charm you originally captured.
If you really wanted to be realistic, you would shrink his head and lengthen his limbs. But I don't think Ali's goal is to recreate a Hans Holbein the Younger portrait.
You're right Big Brother, though I do list Holbien among my influences...
The pencil sketch I drew of him had no nose and no fingers. That's just how I saw the character. Though it did have ears... maybe I should put them back on.
I'll also work on some better bling and post another image.

Wise words there, folks! I totally agree, his not making a half life 2 model, his making a funny cartoon looking Henry. ;)
Here's Lil' Henry in a whistful mood, with ears-as-per-original-sketch and a new chain.

trueSpace?
Edit: Oh, and I forgot to say... great stuff, Ali! ;)
It's great.
However the hair doesn't really seem like hair, as it has no volume to it like the eyebrows do...
Thanks for the replies, I'll see what I can do with the flat hair...

Blender 3d, freeware software.

Though Henry was originally modelled in the free Limited Edition of Metasequoia:
