Title: Herb the nerd- the last episode of hyperman
Post by: dude_r005 on Thu 16/11/2006 11:50:23
Hey folks I just need your opinion on a room of my new game. I was quite far in developing, but since I was taking a rather long break and having to adjust my functions to the new scripting style I thought, I might as well style up some rooms. This is the second room. what do you think? lights, shadows, colours...be honest...

I really like that background! The only thing I would say is, maybe best to move the tall lamp out of the view of the grey box buttons on the wall, the pole and the buttons sort of blend and it makes it look difficult to see the lamp pole, maybe move it a bit or move it to another area of the room, but wow! From a personal view, when I looked at the room, it gave me the feeling of a memory I have of being in a building once and they were good memories, one summer time it was :). The way the room is designed gives it intrigue with the closed door to the right and two passages off to the top and right directions lead me to wonder what the next rooms will look like - though the one at the top looks like it will be the kitchen, it makes me want to see what it will look like in full view, the half view of it in this room makes me feel curious :). Shadows: I think you have conveyed the shadows and colours very well but the far left area under the window, I'm not really sure. It looks like the wall has a groove in it. Perhaps if you smudge it, soften the line on that area so it looks more like a shadow, that might work better. Other than that, I must say you have done very well with this room and the gui looks interesting! It seems to fit well with the room, concept and colour scheme. I cant wait to see some more screenshots :).

Good work, I do like the background. I cannot spot much wrong with it at the moment, upon closer inspection:
I noticed that the floor to the top right does not keep in line with the wall. I feel the lamp shadow should extend to the right a bit more. given the window sunlight.
The table has a shadow on the right of it, I dont know which source of light that is created from.

Just a note, if you post your images in the format of *.PNG, you will allow people to do paintovers without the loss of quality, GIF gives the same effect. Good luck

I like it. The only thing that bothers me a little is the texture on the floor. Maybe a bit less would be more pleasing for the eyes. Right now it looks really busy.

Just on a side note: Some of the objects you have in that room strongly remind me of "The Sims". Is this a coincidence or did you use the game as "inspiration"?

If you want critique, my advice is to post your images in a non-artifacted format like PNG or GIF.  It's difficult to make out textures and such with pixel blobs everywhere.  Looks good from what I can see, though.

hey, wow.
first of all thank all of ya for the feedback. I'll try to rearrange some of the shadows, will try to fix the floor near the kitchen and soften the gray rectangle below the window. the couch and the plant look like from "the sims" because I used graphics of sims as model. I didn't think that the resemblance would be that big.

I post images in jpeg on purpose.

I'll try to post some more images of other rooms soon.
but thanks very much so far

If you post images in jpeg because you're afraid people will steal the the images then that's really not necessary.

On the image, the jpegness of it all ruins the image for me to crit but I think the couch looks bad in relation to the pixel art. The couch looks like you ripped it out of The Sims and stuck it in. The carpet texture flattens out the image because there's no perspective on it and barely any light reacting with it.

But as I say, I can't really tell what's going on because of the jpegness of it all.

hey folks, I haven't quite come to finish the room above, because the couch seems to be a little more tricky that I thought. I never get the light and shadows right.
but here is a new room. I haven't come to add most of the shadows yet, and lots of lines aren't smoothed over.so please don't remind me of doing that.
what do you think?

and...here is how far I got with the room above

a had to remove some layers. of course they will be replaced after the errors are fixed. but what do you think about the new texture of the carpet?

I'm no expert, but although that carpet is an improvement, I'd suggest desaturating it slightly. And now the couch appears to be really sticking out of place around the edges, I guess you'll rectify that when you've settled on the right carpet.

Just pointing out that the perspective of the wall on the right looks wrong.

hey, its me again. I worked my ass off, to get the room look good, but I can't get it right. I remastered the couch, worked out the edge below the window, changed the door and the carpet, but it just keeps on getting worse. can anybody help? what am I doing wrong?

The whole bg looks much better, especially the texture on the carpet. Only the gradient looks a bit weird, especially in the kitchen area, since it looks so much brighter and the rest of the room doesn't.
It might just be my screen (which sucks) or my eyes (which suck as well  ;)), but the walls look really bright to me. Maybe add a tad more grey and higher contrast between the back, side walls and ceiling wouldn't hurt either imo. I think I prefered the darker ceiling of your first version.

But don't get me wrong. This bg is really good already. And I love the bedroom (though I think the slightly different styles clash a little, like the very realistic looking painting in the living room and the poster or the two plants).

Anyway, hope that helps. Looking forward to your game.

Here you go.

1.  Took the vanishing point from the ceiling lines and floor and corrected the perspective of the right wall, door, the hall door, the window and the stand.

2.  Darkened the distant wall slightly.

3.  Darkened the ceiling considerably.  It was way too bright and was drawing too much attention.

4.  Cut off the carpet when it reached the kitchen.

5.  Made the couch thicker.

I left the vanishing point I used so you can see what I did.  You did very well with the shading and the room layout, I particularly liked the reflections on the kitchen floor.  Nice work!

@ProgZmax
thanks really much. My room didn't seem to have any vanishing point at all. that's why it looked so odd! I'm goona smooth some stuff over and will find a solution for the kitchen, because one more door (to one last room) has to fit in). the ceiling was dark before, I just forgot to darken it again after I remastered the carpet and stuff.
thanx really much!

so now this is the final cut.

@ProgZmax
how exactly did you do this thing with the couch? couldn't figure it out.

I just increased the thickness of the two lines you used for the top of the couch.  Your new version looks great.

Well done, that looks very easy on the eyes. The shading = smooth, shadows and lite = believable , and the vanishing points were used correctly. You had a lot of good helpful comments and critiques that you used for your benefit. (Listening is half the battle.)

Ok, a little knit-pick here.

Your new door on the left looks a tiny tiny bit too small.

However, i'm liking the progression.  ;D

I'm not quite sure which kitchen to take...
I've done some more rooms already, but I guess this is enough for a while
