Title: 'hi-res' sprite attempt
Post by: Layabout on Fri 11/01/2008 01:53:52
Hi, I'm Layabout.

His name is Edgar Halthawne. He has a claw for his left hand. I need help.

What do you think of the style? What do you think of it???

Please tell me, I need the attention! I need love!

His right arm needs attention, but it's just supposed to be hanging there rather limp, it is not his 'strong' arm.

Looks pretty nice. Here are some issues I have with it:

- His right arm (our left) appears to be out of the socket. I *think* it should be moved over a little to our right so that it partly goes behind his upper torso. You could also fix his right hand (our left) to be in perspective with the rest of his body. His body is closer to 3/4 while his hand is at 1 (or is that considered 0?).
- His right leg (our left) appears to be a little too short. Even with the turned leg, his foot I think should still be moved down and to the right a little.
- The claw looks cool, but it almost looks like you just misdrew his real hand. Maybe you could change its color?
That's all I have for now. It looks pretty good other than that.

His left arm looks too short to me, unless you intended it that way.

By claw, do you mean a mechanical hand?  What material is it made out of?  If it is made out of metal, I would make it more metalic looking.  If it is supposed to be flesh colored, I might just change the color anyway to make it clear that it's not a real hand.

the claw is a mutation

The shading on the overall seems too simple compared with the head. The head is also a bit too squarey on the sides.

JBurger pretty much nailed it, so here's my attempt to correct things a bit:

-reworked both shoulders
-changed claw and its sleeve
-added depth to skull and torso
-changed arm's and leg's length

What an extremely cool looking geezer.
However I would never have seen that he had a 'claw' if you hadn't said it. It looks like a normal hand.

PS! Khris' changes really hit the spot. The arm looks more normal now and doesn't lean forward as wierdly as before.

Am I the only one who thinks his head is too far to the left? Looks odd to me.

Neat sprite though!

(The Baddie: How is this DOTT style? It's nothing like!  :P )

Yesp, his head is too far to the left. To be honest to me it still looks rushed, and I know I could do better.

And no it's not Dott style. It's somewhat cartoony and stylised, with a little exaggeration thrown in. Nothing to do with DOTT. Anyone ever posts a somewhat cartoony sprite and all the silly people go, ooh dott style, I like!! It's not dott style. Most things aren't dott style. get over it.

And I won't be animating it. I can do better than this, and this isn't even for a project.

Thanks everyone.

I think his head is in exactly the right place. It is correct according to the zip on his jacket, and the angle from which you are viewing him. If you moved the head, you would have to tweak the rest of his upper-body along with it, to satisfy the viewing angle.

This is a very good sprite.

I think the claw hand looked better in the original because it's symmetrical (no hint of thumb). Also I would make the hand larger and more rounded at the two ends. Maybe even add some gruesome looking veins.
