Title: Homepage logo
Post by: SpacePaw on Thu 02/04/2009 15:04:42
I'm making my homepage and I'm working on the design, logo and stuff right now. I have some ideas in my head and I made something like this:
as you can see it's a "pixelated" design thingy..I also have not-pixelated logo which is slightly different (tilted) here:
I can't seem to make a nice looking pixelated version like above with this angle..

Anyways - Should I go for pixelated look or make something with the tilted logo? (like fading bottom reflection and stuff making page design more modern looking)

Both designs are clever *and* nice to look at, so I can only say that PERSONALLY, I prefer the pixelated look in the first logo. It's perfectly retro. I would get rid of the
gamer/artist/developer text, as it is pretty hard to read and detracts from the logo. But that's my personal opinion- ideally you'd find a way to combine the tilted logo in a pixelated look with the text from the upper logo. I bet some pixel wizards here have some pixie dust to spare?

I love the planet (space) paw. Coolest thing since Thundercats. (hoooooo!)

Awww..Thank you very much. I tend to see all my work as not-so-clever-and-kind-of-ugly so it's nice to hear that it isn't ^^ (although I was proud of planet with moons in shape of paw idea :) ).
I tried to get the tilted version pixelated in few redraws but I can't seem to get it right T.T

And thanks about mentioning the gamer/artist/developer beeing not too clear...Maybe I'll make it bigger or delete it from the logo completely...we'll see.

EDIT:

Here's the no-interlace, no-resize version if someone wants to tinker with it

Lookin' quite good. Tilt that planet and get rid of the "messy rescaling" edges on the text, and you have a great logo.

How about this for a tilted version?
I didn't do any outline shading to fit the text style.
EDIT: Now that I look at it, maybe I should have made it a bit sharper than that.

And I totally agree with Ghost, this is a charming design. Go pixels!
(then again, what answer could you expect if you ask in a retro games community =)

It's cool but as you can see there are some problematic parts that look rigged and messy whatever you do with them :/

The main issue is that you're trying to alias every line. You can actually achieve the look you're going for without increasing your color count by actually leaving some of the edges jagged. This isn't perfect, but I fiddled around with the image a bit and moved a few elements around. I had to completely redo the planet ring.

No Scanlines

With Scanlines

The top one without scanlines comes across as a touch more jagged, but with scanlines, I think it masks it rather well. The bottom edge of the ring could use a little more work, but this might give you an idea of the technique at least.

Hi,
I like your logo, but am I the only one who can't read the text ?

In the full-scale (100%) version, I do find the text on the side a bit small.

Other than that I really like the logo (with the tilted look).

it will be resized to 300% so no worries. I'll probably will get rid of the small text too

Thanks PirateCaine :) It looks lots better now. I'll tinker with it some more remembering about how scanlines change the final version

(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5473/pawnew.png) small version
(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8324/pawnew2.png) resized as in the final logo :)
Ok I tinkered with it and made it look better (I hope) it's not great without scanlines but with them I'm quite happy with it (didn't do anything with the small text though so don't mind that :) just comment on the planet)

EDIT:

(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7346/pawnew3.png) small
(http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/299/pawnew4.png) final size
How about this kind of background? I want to make the page like an old computer screen :)

The one with the cleaner black bacground is much better, and I think it already looks great!

I understand the spacepaw thing and the cleverness of the logo, but I still don't find it entirely harmonic.
I think the three moons make it a bit disconnected - too many shapes that don't overlap. I don't have any better suggestions though...

*thinks* I can try bringing it one pixel closer to the planet if it helps ;P

It's not bad.. but how about you add a layer behind the planet of a paw? Just quite transparent (around 70% would ne ideal the way I see it)

Wait for a minute and I'll edit your logo and upload it.

EDIT: Nvm, bad point of mine, actually it wouldn't fit in. Logo is fine as it is.

No, please, I want to get your idea. Maybe I will like it and work something out :)

aaaand another version - I kept the background color but made it darker, also made the lines bit more delicate and I tried Andail's advice - it turned out to be better indeed :) Thanks Andail (I know it's not yet as you suggested but it's closer :) )

Well, I was thinking of creating a paw of some sort. And place it behind the planet, but with the paw being quite transparent.

Since the planet already is a footprint of a paw I don't see the point in putting another paw in it. Also, using semi-transparent parts in logos isn't such a sweet idea. I think a good logo should be able to function in pure black&white. This one does, as it is.

I really like this logo. Very clever. :)

I think I get what Dualnames means- paw as one shape, rather dark, and the planet in front, sans paw toes, in a lighter tone.

THe new version's great, Paws, go with it!

The main issue that I would see with having the paw image display as a 'hole' in the planet image is that it would look like a ripoff of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy logo:

I do understand that the image is a slight bit lopsided with the 'fingers' of the paw extending outwards like that, but I don't really see any need to draw it in any further - looks just fine the way it is, in my opinion. Also, working with too many tones or transparencies, it'd take away the simplicity of the image, which can currently be represented in pure B/W tones and look just fine. My vote is to leave it as-is.

I think the latest version looks quite good!  With personal logos and such, I recommend not focusing too much on what other people like and instead on what it is you want to represent.  If pixel-style art is a focus for your site, this design will work for you as long as it is consistent with the rest of the site. I don't think you need to worry about placing your 'qualifications' in the logo; leave that for business cards or an about page.

Thanks :) You're right :) But it's always nice to hear that it looks good ;)

I only noticed it myself because it's on someone's signature (I forget who, sorry). Honestly, I see no problem with the image the way you have. If you're concerned about doing something 100% original, I'd say you're pretty much SOL, because nearly any insignia you could likely come up with has probably already been done. Especially with the proliferation of Sci-Fi, the 'ring around a planet or planet analog' is nearly a universal concept these days.

Besides, the way you have it designed right now represents your name nearly perfectly, I'd say. I like the way you have it, and as long as you keep it with the 'fingers' outside the paw as you had originally designed it, I don't see an issue whatsoever.

You've done a good job on the Logo. Finalize it and use it, and stop worrying about other peoples' opinions so much.

Seconed; I mean, people could sue MARS for having this ring thing that also was used in Halo.  ::) And in The Ring Thing, actually.
Finalize indeed, looking forward to it!

Haha, and the person whose signature it is in posted in this thread and everything :P!

Who else would have something to do with HHGTG in their sig if it wasn't DualNames? The lad's practically feverish with his love of it! ;)

Great logo, by the way. I love those orange tones :)

Aye, I thought it was him, but for some reason when I went to check to be sure it wasn't loading from my cache, so I couldn't see it in his sig when I wrote the post originally. It is indeed Dualnames. And apologies to Dualnames for being forgetful as well.

And just to keep on topic with the thread, yes, I love the orange tones as well. Though, if you're going for 'old skool computer screen', Apple 2e Green is probably the most common choice. Regardless, as I said before, It's awesome as-is. I say no need to keep working on it, it looks fine.

No worries Caine, if there were boobs on it all people would remember it ;D

On topic, originally seeing the clean version of it appeared as a copy of the HHGTG but as it is now, it doesn't really seem that way. And well, the way the cultural phenomenon of Hitchhiker's has invaded our lives, any logo containing a planet would seem to be a copy of it.
