Title: How do I improve on this background?
Post by: Cryxo on Tue 25/08/2009 14:33:23
I am working on this background which I have sketched into Paint.net with my bamboo tablet. But how the "huh" do I improve on this. The game I am working on is not pixel based.
I am not bothered about perspective getting the perspective right, our game is satirical/ill humour based.

I also have Paint Shop Pro X to use but I have no idea on how to improve on this.

The background itself is the flat of the game's protagonist. Tv sitting on cardboard box, sofa, shelves etc... At the back, the door which is open is a cupboard with no shelves in it. The other doors are a bedroom and a WC (kitchen is to the left but won't be accessible in-game).

Sorry for being oblivious and thank you in advance for your help.

Thats what I am trying to do but... how do you paint with the lines still showing? I know this sounds stupid but I have tried the paint behind option in Paint Shop Pro and it does not work.  ???

Make a new layer (maybe lock the ones these lines are in) then you can paint over it without destroying the original sketch. Over those sketched lines, use the line tool (or drawing striaght lines) so you make "fields" (closed shapes which don't have interuptions in the edge), those can then be painted in with the bucket (should be an actual bucket for an icon or similar tool and you'll be on your way.

Btw first what you should do is check your perspective and make sure the lines are horizontal and vertical (or whatever they should be)

Yes, primitive is it not? Basic simple wash. The room is dark and tv is supposed to be on, so shadow to come.
How can I improve on this?

Thank you Anian!

No, problemo. Only wished you listened more of my advices - the perspective thing is especially visible on that carpet in front the door on the right but it's seen in other parts as well.

Add frames to the doors, wires coming out of the tv, stuff on the shelves...generally more detailes

I know you say you aren't worried about fixing the perspective but in my opinion the perspective is the main problem. Even crazy cartoony backgrounds are usually in the correct perspective.

Very quick and dirty and still not in perspective but I think it looks a bit better.

Thank you guys. That is a real help. I got so caught up with paint/colour that I forgot about details, clean up and perspective.

I will get down and dirty with this when the time comes. Thank you so much for the advice.
