Greetings.. this is my first background I ever made.. It is supposed to be my real bedroom. Though I like this background it looks a bit dull. How can I improve it? shading\lighting?

ghostface

 :o  But seriously, ras, thats a great bg. You're a great addition to this community. The only thing I can see is the pillows. The edges kinda look like strawberrys, maybe have them as zippers? That's my comments. Maybe the veterans can give a little more critique. Great job.

I think you answered your own question there.

The second thing that your image needs is some definition on windows, doors and stuff.

Also, you could add some details like: doorknob, some chairs, a lightsource, maybe some paintings,...

ras_maxim

I stiil dont know hoe to light / darken.. but will try.. thanks for comments. And small details will be made as objects in AGS

Well, before adding shadows and hi-lights, I think it's more important to get the perspective correct.Ã,  And, as you have it now, it's quite off.

Here's a quick paint-over to show you what I mean:

I have added in (in varying colors) the outlines in a single vanishing point perspective.Ã,  I created the vp (vanishing point) centered and about 100 or so pixels above the top of the image (I added the extra space into photoshop then cropped out for this version).

Adding this simple vp and making the image follow it will improve your bg quite a bit.Ã,  Always remember that when you're creating a room bg like this, chances are, you're in a room like this.Ã,  Take a look around and see how things look.Ã,  What can you see through the door?Ã,  What parts of the desk are hidden from sight?Ã,  Can you see the window's ledge?Ã,  etc.

I would suggest reworking the image using better perspective, then re-post an update and then worry about shading!

Good luck and I hope this is helpful!

I think I missed something here.

ras_maxim

Oh thanks you a lot DarthÃ,  Mandrab! What program do you use for creating outlines? Well, I think I'll need to redraw everything over.. rrr!! And I made a new BG for now, but again, with incorrect perspective!Ã,  :P

EDIT:

Sorry, missed that you used Photoshop.

I think the new room looks great color wise if you can redo it with the right perspective and use all the addtions from your last image it will look great.

me too, this bg looks like quite a rush and badly perspectivisised. darths perspective is good but everything looks like a paper cutout to me.
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

ras_maxim

Stop mocking me... This is my first time I paint a BG.. Give me time and I will improve it.. Step by step..   :-[

It's an okay background, but there isn't enough detail. The view of the city through the window looks really good, and there isn't enough of that in the room.

Judging by the huge improvement from origianl to edited version here, ras_maxim, you are catching up with two drawing lessons per hour!

The curtain and city sight are great, but you should add more details to the beds (and apply DMs perspective).

I am in a bit of a hurry, so I will only post an (quickly scanned and unworked on) haf of a bedroom I drew only yesterday, just to show you what I mean:

int do_you_like_me;
if (do_you_like_me == 1) Display ("You can call me Al");
else {}

Darth Mandarb

Yes, the new details (curtains, city-scape) are really good!

Throw in the corrected perspective and this background has much potential!!

Keep it up!

i find the floor empty, also the wall, some suggestions(note if this is suposed to be your bedroom, the skip this part if you can't find it in your room)

* a rug on the floor between the beds
* a shelf on the wall, maybe wit some pictures, or books
* closet
* maybe some electrical outlet on the wall

ras_maxim

it is a good idea, I'll add shelves and rug later. Now I have redone BG with right perspective and added some minor details. What do you think?

BlackMan890

not bad 8)

*the keyboard needs a cable
*there are no electrical cordes or (i don't know the name of it)
the one you plug cables in

also, i have NEVER in my whole life, seen such a tidy room

Maybe his keyboard is a cordless one :D . Cables and such would add a bit of "life" I agree on that one.

Now that the perspective is fixed, it really bothers me, that the somputer screen is square. Also, ras_maxim, imagine you sitting at that computer, the monitor has to be further back, and mouse/keyboard facing it, or are you looking "around the corner" all the time. Speaking of sitting: some kind of a chair would probably also add the feeling of reality...

And yes, this looks even tidier than the room I was living in when I was a soldier... (I would suggest some magazines piling up on the floor, and maybe a plant in one of the corners. Also posters and such would help.

Maybe some laundry under the bed?

This background is getting real good, you know!
int do_you_like_me;
if (do_you_like_me == 1) Display ("You can call me Al");
else {}

I atempted a VERY rushed paint over. Please don't embarice your game by using it but it is just to show you what you left out.

- The quilts on the beds
- Shading
- The keyboard moved
- Mouse moved
- Random poster on the wall (it looked plain)

Hope it's going to help.
